Two children died and three were seriously injured after a car plunged into an icy pond in Minnesota on Thursday.

Rescue crews in suburban Minneapolis arrived at the scene of a 1998 Pontiac Grand Am that ran off the road Thursday and sunk into the frigid waters of a 9-foot-deep retention pond. The 23-year-old driver, Marion Guerrido, escaped the car with no injuries, but five children were left trapped in the car. CNN affiliate KARE reported that the Guerrido and another man jumped into the water to try and get the children out, but were unable to reach them.

Rescuers arrived and were able to remove the first child within about 20 minutes, but the last child was in the water for nearly 40 minutes, CNN reports. Three children – ranging in age from 1 to 6 – survived with serious injuries, while a five-year-old and seven-year-old were killed.
