A Massachusetts teenager who allegedly murdered a math teacher at his high school last month was upset when she mentioned the state of Tennessee, where he had recently moved from, according to a police indictment unsealed Friday.

Philip D. Chism moved away from Tennessee following his parents’ divorce, which was called “stressful” in the affidavit, the Boston Globe reports. Chism, 14, who is accused of raping and murdering Colleen Ritzer, also allegedly left behind a note that said “I hate you all,” according to police.

Chism has been indicted for first-degree murder in the attack, after which her body was dumped in the woods near the school in Danvers, Mass. He is also charged as a youthful offender for aggravated rape and armed robbery after allegedly penetrating Ritzer and stealing her underwear, cellphone, and credit cards. He had pleaded not guilty and is being held at Department of Youth Services.

He should get life in prison with no possibility of parole.

Unfortunately Massachusetts doesn't have the death penalty. This boy deserves the chair no, less! His parents are also fully responsible for her death, they both need to be charged with negligence causing death.

Don't talk to me about 'War on Women' when our society starts making excuses for petulant, maladjusted 14 yr old losers turned rapist-murderers who don't value human life.

My single mother was divorced thrice and moved us frequently around the country in search of work. So did many other children from worst socio-economic circumstances.

The only thing on my mind as a 14 yr old was how to do well in school, go to college and get a great paying job to reward my parent for her years of hardship and sacrifice. I didn't need anyone to tell me that raping my math teacher and slicing her throat wasn't going to help my goals in life.

14 year old soccer star ?

.....the kid snapped--psychotic break.

What horrors did this kid experience that incited the level of rage required to execute this innocent teacher ?

Okay, I consider myself a pretty liberal and tolerant person, but ENOUGH. I think that more kids need to be tried as adults for the crimes they actually commit. Murder, rape, etc. should carry more risk of losing your life as the perpetrator, or spending it in jail. These gangs of kids who are making a "game" of suckerpunching and assaulting innocent people are psychopathic. Not enough parents control their children; they're scared of disciplining them. Gangs take advantage of the age factor and the juvenile justice system. Please tell me how getting raped by a 16 year old means less than getting raped by a 20 year old? Sorry, but more of these kids belong in prison, not "facilities."

But it's not his fault. That's the drivel we'll be getting soon.

@mutilate.the.weak How do you know that the parents didn't try to raise a good kid ... I have known outstanding parents who sometimes just have some really ruogh kids for whatever reason.

Also, how would the death penalty change anything?  It won't bring her back, and if executed, his suffering ends instantly (not to mention the added tax payer expense since it is more expensive to execute than to incarcerate for life).  Wouldn't you like t o see him suffer a bit?

@mutilate.the.weak does your mommy and daddy know that you are posting comments on the internet? That's a thing for grownups, little feller.  Stop being naughty  Myself, I didn't let my children do that until they were at least 8 years old!  Maybe your mommy and daddy need some parenting classes.

perseusathenian, your situation may well have been tough but it was not necessarily the same as what this boy faced. In this case, there is well-documented evidence of physical, psychological and emotional abuse by the boy's father.  I read your post as you are very much a martyr. I doubt that you are well-adujusted and healthy. Also, how old are you? If you are much older than this boy, you didn't have the same pressure. Your mother divorced 3X, how many times have you divorced?  I also doubt your mother was so great. She is the one who made 3 poor marriage decisions while having and raising children.

@perseusathenian  It's not that it is an excuse, it's more of a potential cause.  Divorces can certainly strain children in many ways.  This is very extreme and of course it takes a sick and twisted individual to respond in this manner, but the "excuses" you mention, don't help the situation at all.  It's basically making a bad situation worse and children are often stuck in the middle of it all and do not know how to handle it.

@sseattleboy She made a comment about his home state. The kid is just plane bad and a nut case.

The facts of this situation don't fit with what you are describing. The divorce was not only reported as stressful, but also that the cause for it was physical, psychological and emotional abuse. With those facts and that the only connectedness this boy had was with his friends in the community of Tennesee, it's not too much of a jump to conclude that he was ripped away from his support system and his friends and the girl he loved and that just added to the emotional abuse from prior. Like sseattleboy said, he had a psychotic break. That is why he can't tell you the motive. He doesn't know. He should be tried as a juvenile and he should be found innocent by reason of temporary insanity. Trajedy all the way around, but this boy is not evil. I bet that Colleen would agree.

The school should take some blame for allowing kids to carry backpacks. If chism didn't have a backpack he would not have been able to hide his stealth clothing, duct tape, reflection mirrors, hooded ski mask, box cutter, extra-blood absorbing paper towels and two changes of clothing. Not only would someone have seen him walking and running, pushing and pulling a recycling bin, he wouldn't have been able to stop the huge amount of blood squirting all over and made her body disappear when a student walked into the bathroom right after killing her. Without the backpack, none of this could have happened

@RichardPatel@mutilate.the.weak First off let me reiterate what you said in the first paragraph. Although I would also to not bother responding to trolls, it just makes them happy... well as happy as someone that miserable can get without torturing small animals.

But as far as the rest i must disagree. We do not execute in order to punish. Our purpose with justice is not to force suffering upon anyone. In the end the only purpose is to protect the herd and maintain the peace. In a case such as this there is no reason to waste resources. This person is not now or ever going to be a useful member of society. We should do as nature does and cull him from the herd. These genes should not be allowed to spread and we should waste no time in doing it.

A hard luck story doesn't excuse anything.  Ad hominem attacks don't improve your argument, and, in fact, undermine it.

This kid was defective - as so many people are.  It's relatively easy to see that.  A hell of a lot of people are physically, emotionally and psychologically abused as kids.  MOST parents shouldn't breed, but we don't do anything to screen out the defective parents who create defective kids.

Still, if someone breaks under that relatively small amount of pressure to the point of becoming irrationally homicidal and a rapist to boot, they need to be put down.  And in this kid's case, it would have happened eventually.  If the stresses of puberty in modern society didn't set him off, the stresses of ADULT life would have.

This is evolution at work. Garbage in, garbage out.  Unlike most of the country who believe otherwise, I've noticed that kids of crappy parents tend to be crappy kids and no amount of "oh, kids are our future and they all have the potential to become president" nonsense is going to change that.  The rare exceptions don't even remotely offset the devastation caused by the norm.

Throw the kid out with the garbage and bury him, then move along.  He's caused enough trouble as it is.

@AmandaAltamirano He raped her, killed her, stuffed her body in a trash bin, and hauled her out of there to dump in what he thought would be a secure location, then decided to go to the local Wendy's to eat lunch, on HER card which he stole (among other things, including her underwear)... Temporary insanity?? If you think that is insanity then all people who are capable of careful planning of their day are insane.

mpschaff

@AmandaAltamirano - you've got to be kidding! he should be found innocent?  Anybody who behaves this way is not sane (in control of their mental faculties in the way society deems normal) and should be found guilty and separated from society.  Excusing this behavior as the unfortnate consequence of a (very) bad upbringing is touching but naive and short-sighted.  The behavior was wrong.  We can guess but cannot know the emotional circumstances he was in at the time, but we can know one thing.  If we measure individuals based on why instead of what we'll end up with a lot of sociopathic behavior perpetrated by very good storytellers.

@DeweySayenoff Again i agree with you dewey, that does not always happen, but you are right on with this one.
