Two miners were killed and twenty more were injured by carbon monoxide poisoning on Sunday in southwestern Colorado.

The Associated Press reports that the miners were underground at the Revenue-Virginius mine in Ouray, Colorado, when two were killed and twenty hospitalized for carbon monoxide poisoning. Investigators are trying to determine the cause of the source of the gas, and whether it was connected to a blast which reportedly took place on Saturday. The men were reportedly wearing personal respirators, and there did not appear to be an equipment malfunction.

Star Mine LLC, the Denver-based company that operates the mine, has permits to mineĀ silver, gold and sulfides. About 100 miners work on the site. According to the AP, the mine will remain closed pending the investigation.
