The search for an unidentified man who plummeted 2,000 feet from an airplane Thursday into the waters south of Miami continued Friday morning.

Crews from the U.S. Coast Guard and Miami-Dade Police and Fire Rescue searched into the evening Thursday, after the pilot of a Piper PA 46 told air traffic control in Miami that a passenger opened a door and fell from the plane, the Miami News Observer reports.

“Mayday, mayday, mayday,” the pilot said at 1:30 pm Thursday. “I have a door ajar and a passenger that fell down.”

According to a report from the website ATC.Net which collects air-traffic control broadcasts worldwide, the air traffic controller responded, “You said you’ve got a passenger that fell out of your plane?”

“That’s correct, sir,” said the pilot. “He opened the back door and he just fell out of the plane.”
