Police in Oregon said an unexploded device found beside a county prosecutor’s office early Wednesday morning could have leveled the building.

Medford Police Lt. Mike Budreau told the local Mail Tribune that the police found a large propane tank on fire outside the building that houses the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office. A small explosion was reported at 4:38 a.m. that damaged the exterior, but the device did not fully detonate, he said.

“I think that it’s safe to assume that had this bomb went off as it was intended to, it would have most likely destroyed most of the building, and we believe that was the intent of the suspect,” Budreau told the Mail Tribune.

The police in Medford, in southwestern Oregon, have not identified a suspect, but said a male in dark clothing was spotted near the scene and ran away from police.  It’s still unclear if he was connected with the attempted bombing.

Local police were joined by the FBI, the Oregon bomb squad, and the ATF.
