Authorities are “at a loss” to explain why a Pennsylvania nursing home employee shot and killed a resident with a semiautomatic gun before turning the gun on herself Monday evening.

Police believe Aimee Larkin, a 42-year-old nurse at Abington Manor in South Abington, Pa., brought the weapon to work and shot 79-year-old Howard Kinney in the chest before shooting herself in the head at about 5:30 p.m, the Scranton TimesTribune reports. South Abington township Police Chief Robert Gerrity said “we may never know” the motive for the apparent murder-suicide. It’s unclear if the weapon belonged to Larkin. No suicide note was found at the scene.

Larkin had worked at the nursing home since 2011, and Kinney had been a resident for about two years.
