Police in Arizona used a severed finger left behind at a crime scene to track down a man suspected of stealing copper wiring from an air conditioning truck.

A spokeswoman from the Glendale, Ariz., police department provided new details on the case this week, where a man trying to steal copper wiring from an air conditioning truck cut off his finger and left it in the wiring, the Arizona Republic reports. The police used the severed digit to obtain a fingerprint, leading them to 29-year-old Joshua Allen Goverman. When police caught up with Goverman, he initially claimed he lost his finger repairing a car, but came clean when they confronted him with his missing finger, police said.

Goverman was booked on suspicion of theft, and as of Wednesday it was not clear if he had a lawyer.
