A severe storm brewing over Austin, Tex., will pass over much of the country’s midsection Thursday, meaning lousy weather for Halloween trick-or-treaters.

The Weather Channel expects stormy weather in the Ohio Valley, the lower Mississippi Valley, and the western Gulf Coast Thursday, with the potential of “torrential rainfall” and tornadoes in some parts, before spreading to the northeast by Friday. Residents in Indianapolis, Memphis, and Houston may want to forgo the Halloween sweets Thursday night amid sour weather.

In Austin, heavy rain has caused flash floods that have forced scores of people from their homes and required helicopter rescues, NBC News reports.
