A man from Kansas who spent the final days of his life trapped in the wreckage of his van in Utah penned goodbye letters to his family.

David Welch, 54, was found dead inside his mangled minivan at the bottom of a 50-foot ravine by a hitchhiker on Oct. 18, the Associated Press reports. Welch was originally reported missing on Sept. 2 when he left his home without telling anyone where he was going.

Investigators say that they believe Welch fell asleep at the wheel and sped off the road. Welch was likely injured and unable to get out of the van. They believe, however, that he survived for days — possibly weeks — in the wreck. The content of Welch’s final letters to his wife of 31 years and four adult sons will remain private.
