The doctor convicted of involuntary manslaughter in the death of Michael Jackson was released from prison early Monday morning after serving less than two years behind bars.

Conrad Murray, a former cardiologist who was Michael Jackson’s physician, was convicted in 2011 of involuntary manslaughter for giving the pop superstar an overdose of a powerful anesthetic as a sleep aid. Murray was sentenced to four years in prison but was released early due to a change in California law due to prison overcrowding.

Murray has denied wrongdoing throughout his incarceration. His license to practice medicine was suspended or revoked in three states, but according to the Los Angeles Times, he has filed an appeal in hopes of having his license reinstated in California. His lawyers are also petitioning the state of Texas to reinstate his license, ABC News reports.

Murray’s release comes on the heels of the October 2 ruling that concert promoter AEG Live, which hired Murray to care for the Jackson, was not at fault in the pop star’s death.
