Emergency crews respond to the scene where a ride malfunctioned at the North Carolina State Fair, Oct. 24, 2013 in Raleigh, N.C.

Five people were injured — two critically — on a ride called the Vortex at the North Carolina State Fair in Raleigh on Thursday night.

According to witnesses, the ride had stopped and passengers were preparing to disembark when it started again suddenly, injuring five people ages 14 to 39, including the ride’s operator. WRAL News said two people were injured critically and all five were taken to a local hospital.

A spokeswomen for the North Carolina Department of Labor, which inspects fair rides, said the rides are inspected three times a day. An investigation is underway to determine what caused the Vortex to restart abruptly.
