A Florida man who was sentenced to life in prison this week for stabbing his ex-girlfriend 32 times in the face and neck found forgiveness from the most unlikely source: the woman he tried to kill.

“‘I offer forgiveness and I forgive him,” Robert Lee Burton Jr’s ex-girlfriend Melissa Dohme said after the sentencing on Monday, ABC reports. “Forgiveness is a sign of letting go and when you forgive someone that hurts you, you take away their power.

While Burton will spend the rest of his life behind bars for attempted first-degree murder, Dohme is turning over a new leaf. She’s even found love — with the paramedic who saved her.

Dohme is now dating Cameron Hill, one of the paramedics who responded to her 911 call in early 2012. Hill told the Tampa Bay Times that he immediately felt a connection when he found Dohme, even though she was so covered with blood he couldn’t even tell she was blonde. “I don’t know why, but I knew I’d see her again,” he said.
