The student who shot and killed a math teacher and injured two other students at a Nevada school on Monday was only 12 years old and brought the gun from home, police said Tuesday.

Sparks Police Department Deputy Chief Tom Miller said at a press conference Tuesday that the parents are cooperating and could face criminal charges if a prosecutor decided to press them.

Local authorities are still investigating where the gun, a 9mm semi-automatic Ruger handgun, was purchased, the Associated Press reports. Police released the suspect’s age and said he was in seventh grade, but they have not yet released the name of the shooter, who turned the weapon on himself and committed suicide, out of respect for the family.

Police also said at the press conference Tuesday that they do not yet know the suspect’s motive in the attack at Sparks Middle School in Sparks, Nev., just east of Reno.

The two injured students are in stable condition and recovering.
