The mother of baseball legend Cal Ripken Jr. broke up an attempted carjacking on Tuesday.

Violet Ripken was at the parking lot of a bank in Aberdeen, Maryland, when a man armed with a handgun demanded her car. Ripken pushed the panic button on her keyring, setting off the car alam, which scared the man away. He was caught by police two hours later.

Ripken, whose son, baseball Hall of Famer Cal Ripken Jr. set the major league record for most consecutive games played at 2,632, has stared down frightening situations before. In July 2012, she was kidnapped in her home and found unharmed the next morning.
