Second Dry Ice Explosion At LAX

Detectives investigating how bottle bombs were left in secure areas

A second dry ice bomb exploded at a Los Angeles airport Monday night and two more were found, just a one day after an initial dry ice explosion on Sunday.

Four dry ice bombs have been located at LAX so far, all placed in areas restricted to employee access, the Los Angeles Times reports.

No injuries were reported in either explosion, and the dry ice bombs had little impact on airport activity. But detectives from the local police and the FBI are investigating how the devices got placed in secure areas, including outside the terminal near the planes themselves. Authorities said they do not suspect terrorism at this time.

The bombs are very simple, just dry ice in a bottle.

maybe they should hire these people to beef up security. The TSA isn't doing a good job apparently.

It doesn't matter if it was a harmless prank. They managed to get past security and that's something to take serious

Good thing it's just dry-ice...came to know about them type where if someone would put chars of glass, small tack nails, along with BBs...that would do some damage to a person..

Someone pulled a harmless prank and got national coverage. That was probably the goal to begin with.

My kid was into these a few years ago. No big deal and even if you added glass or shrapnel it would not go far. There are to many paranoids out there. Who and where they placed them maybe stupid , but they are pretty much harmless.

You guys should stop calling them bombs. It's a stupid prank (And the idiot behind it is gonna be in big trouble). Like Drano and aluminum in a plastic bottle. They sound scary but don't cause anyone any physical harm. Its like blowing a empty bag of chips with air and then popping it.

Did anyone ever notice that no matter what the news story is about it always ends with a conservative and a liberal arguing and calling each other names.

Scary! Dry ice today. Dry run for something else tomorrow?

That these are "dry runs" seems likely to me. What is being tested is that such bombs, once successfully placed, are difficult to find because they lack the chemical signature of conventional explosives and require no electrical or mechanical timer. Also, the ingredients are readily available and hard to trace. If these advantages are successfully verified, future versions might include enhancements such as glass shrapnel.

Dry runs at our airports and airlines folks....Just a matter of time when the real thing will hit us.

$10 says it's someone who thinks they're proving a point. That if they can plant dry ice "bombs", anyone could plant anything.

Like I said yesterday, dry ice or frozen carbon dioxide, does not explode.  It sublimes inside whatever container it is in and gradually increases the pressure inside the container until the container bursts. Its rather annoying if you ask me.  But if you want my professional opinion (since I am a chemist) this could only have been done by an employee: No passenger would be able to smuggle dry ice to the airport let alone past security without being very noticeable (or having the dry ice completely sublime), regardless of whether its on their person (which would cause burns and is very painful) or whether they were carrying it in a cooler.  I said this yesterday too, and today they determine that its in all areas restricted to employee access...surprise.  I would hope the investigation is seriously considering employees as suspects.  Personally I hope they catch the moron.

I've made one before(for humor on my own property). The sound resembles that of a shotgun, especially for those uninitiated to such things. Though the explosions are barely strong enough to blow up a mailbox, the sound could definitely generate fear and potentially panic.

Dry ice bombs?????

@JamesRay They got arrested too....and it WAS an employee.  Like I said yesterday: No passenger could have smuggled that amount of dry ice into an airport past security without being VERY noticeable.  It would have to be an employee.

@Neetusingh2341 Dry ice in a closed container does explode.  As the solid cabon dioxide sublimates (turns directly from a liquid to a gas), the pressure inside the container dramatically increases until the container ruptures, causing a explosion.

@Adam_Smith I'm not sure about the dry run idea.  If terrorists had access to the secured areas, it doesn't make sense to do something like this that doesn't cause any damage but draws a lot of attention.  Doing so would risk that the authorities would find the security holes and close them.

@EricsBizTweets   You say, "dry ice or frozen carbon dioxide, does not explode". Well, Mister - gun powder also does not explode, unless confined in a container and ignited (you high falutin classroom idiot with ZERO common sense/real world practical experience)! In the probable case you are a classroom/laboratory "chemist" who has never experienced the thrill of a dry ice BOMB (which apparently you are totally ignorant of), they are quite powerful and capable of maiming and killing, in addition to causing panic and mayhem.

Perp is likely nothing more than a stressed employee choosing a stupid way to release some pent-up angst, or some dumb Polack thinking it's a funny joke. It would be totally stupid to do what he did - any fool would know it would be easy as pie to track him down - and making BOMBS is a very very serious offense, which he is now haplessly well aware of. There is a penitentary in this man's future!

@EricsBizTweets You do not work at LAX I hope? It is an inside job so to speak for sure. The morons at airports hire a lot of Muslims to work in different capacities, even working the flight lines. Go figure why that is.  Pretty stupid.

Dude_who_cares
Dude_who_cares

Yes you sound very open minded with that comment. Would you prefer only white men do the security work at airports, and do you think then that we could feel all safe and secure. I call BS, and your prejudice is why people hate cops.

EricsBizTweets

@Openminded1 @EricsBizTweets Nope, don't work there. In fact, I'm on the other side of the country...was only concerned for those involved. As for the incident itself, I was just pointing out my observation in hopes that it might be helpful in catching the moron or morons because quite frankly, this kind of device is pretty annoying, simply because it's sole purpose is purely for the sake of starting a panic.

@Openminded1 @Dude_who_caresDear OpenMindedOne- I trust you were a Good Cop, someone worthy of community respect and trust. You say, "people that hate cops are criminals most of the time"... Please allow me to speak for the minority: a lot of the people who hate cops (not an insignificant number) ARE LAW ABIDING citizens who have witnessed or borne the brunt of heavy-handed PIG brutality, or know folks who have. Increasingly, the once-respectable vocation of Policing has devolved into The unConstitutional FASCIST Police State we now find ourselves living in, heartily enforced by skinheaded, jackbooted, tattooed animals and lesbians in military outfits, who are driven more by hate and anger, than anything approaching love and compassion for fellow humans. Yes there are a lot of Good Cops, but alas they appear to be in the minority. Even granting you the benefit of the doubt - I wonder, how many times in your career did you look the other way or suspend your conscience while your swine-in-arms acted devilish? Roadside checkpoints, thousands of no-knock raids terrorizing citizenry, revenue generation, corrupt administration enabling, arresting disabled Vets at National Memorials "closed" by a despotic POTUS - these do nothing to establish nor enhance any Cop's image in the public's eye.

What "cops" did to Christopher Dorner - conspiring on-air and then burning him alive, and to Miriam Carey, a looney mother with child, and countless others including animals and dogs left-and-right - has given a running non-stop chilling technicolor example of the decrepit immorality now possessing PD's across America. Cops ar no longer here to "Serve and Proctect" - they intimidate and harass at best, or at worst they Taze and Kill WITH IMPUNITY, then getta nice chuckle afterwards ("we were JUSTIFIED"). This includes literally hundreds of MURDERS and thousands of TORTURES annually.

How does the OpenMindedOne account for this factual situation? What have you done to help?

Respetfully, MarkPatriot

PS - I pray for all cops everyday.

@Dude_who_cares @Openminded1 its simple dummy muslims hate non muslims. and they really hate the USA, where have you been living in canada? with those bleeding heart morons.

Openminded1
Openminded1

@Dude_who_cares @Openminded1 That is not what i implied there are many dumb as american muslims. you are very naive sonny, muslims are the most violent fanatical bs religion in the world. Kenya mall murders, syria, boston brothers /9/11, iran just today, pakistan, india, it goes on and on moron open your eyes and listen to the world not just the block you live on. Are you a muslim?

Dude_who_cares
Dude_who_cares

@Openminded1And you won't reply why you think it's a bad idea to hire a muslim at the airport. Then you state that "Americans" should be doing the work, implying that all americans are non-muslim or that there are no americans that are of pakistani, indian, or philipine descent. It's this train of thought that ruins an entire police force. I'm surprised you made it 30 years.

Openminded1

@Dude_who_cares Ps; you did not answer how many times you been arrested, I will take a wild guess and say at least 3 times in your punk ass life. my guess would possession of a controlled substance maybe a DUI, and disorderly conduct, with a drinking under age charge. maybe even indecent exposure for showing your short cummings.

Openminded1

@Dude_who_cares @Openminded1 That moron made no sense. I have gone against black people using the race card, so I have no problem with fox or a moron like you who must watch MSNBC for your enlightened dumb ass remarks.

Dude_who_cares
Dude_who_cares

@Openminded1 Your narrow mind continues to shine through. Maybe you should check out drudgereport or FOX news, they are right up your alley. Except you will have to disregard the comments from them when they are against black people.

@Dude_who_cares Dude you are new on here so i will go light on you and you sound young. I am black moron, so you assumed wrong, and secondly Muslims are not all black , they come in all colors. do some home work before you post. people that hate cops are criminals most of the time. How many time you been arrested moron. I would prefer americans doing the security work and not women and men from India, or pakistan or the philipines etc yes. I was not talking about the dumbos at TSA any way It is other airport staff dummy . that are aloud to walk the flight line.

Openminded1

@zahraflower1228 @Openminded1 @EricsBizTweets i was always fair and treated people they way the treated me. It does not mean I have to like Muslims, I do not trust them and if you do you are a moron. In 30 years bleeding heart I had 3 complaints, all by race card ass wipes, who did what ever they could to get the charges dropped including lying . I rose to the rank of commander.with a major police dept. I am a realist with real  street experience, not like you sitting at home watching the distorted news reports, or watching episodes of law and order. I say it like it is, PC is for liar"s and politicians, which of course is one in the same.

@Openminded1 @EricsBizTweets YOU are a 30 year police veteran and you say stupid, hatemongering moronic things like 'muslims work at airports'.  God help the people who had to deal with you in any capacity.

EricsBizTweets
EricsBizTweets

@Openminded1 @EricsBizTweets I'm sure they will. Hopefully sooner rather than later.  (Also, 30 years is quite a long time...Thanks for your service as I know law enforcement is never an easy task (not to mention one of the harder jobs out there) and is, unfortunately, becoming more and more difficult.)

Openminded1
Openminded1

@EricsBizTweets @Openminded1 I was joking with you, i am aware of the implications I am a retired 30 year police veteran. Law enforcement will find out who was involved , morons like that make mistakes and there are cameras and time stamps etc ,they will narrow it down.
