Officials at a Cincinnati-area hospital are investigating how a patient managed to enter their custody while carrying several firearms he ultimately used to threaten the staff.

Police in Montgomery, Ohio, say they responded to a call at Bethesda North Hospital on Thursday night, where they found a patient, a male whose identity was not released, holding nurses and other personnel at gunpoint. He was carrying a duffel bag containing three pistols, ammunition and a holster, The Cincinnati Enquirer reports. He also had animal attack deterrent spray and pepper spray in the bag.

It’s unclear what precipitated the incident, and no other information has been released by authorities. However, police say they are consulting with local prosecutors to discuss charges that could include aggravated assault, intimidation and violation of weapons laws.
