The three-star Navy Admiral who was also second-in-command of all U.S. nuclear forces was relieved of his position at U.S. Strategic Command, a Navy spokesperson confirmed Wednesday.

Tim Giardina will also drop in rank to two-star admiral as a result of an investigation into gambling allegations, including that he used counterfeit gambling chips, the AP reports.

This kind of removal is extremely rare in military history.
