While it is unseasonably warm elsewhere—New York and the east coast are seeing temperatures as high as 86 degrees, and Tropical Storm Karen in the Golf Coast is expected to make landfall late Saturday or early Sunday morning—South Dakota is getting an early snow.

Winter Storm Atlas hit parts of the northern Rockies and High Plains. The heaviest snow in South Dakota covered roads and brought down trees and power lines. Officials have asked drivers to leave the roads until further notice. The snow will continue to coat Wyoming, South Dakota, North Dakota, Montana, Colorado, Utah and Nebraska this weekend.
