Florida’s Jacksonville International Airport reopened Tuesday night after being temporarily shutdown by police who were investigating two suspicious packages.
One of the packages contained a “device” that “certainly had some destructive nature,” a spokesman for the city’s sheriff’s office told reporters. Officials have yet to provide more details. One package was found in an airport terminal while the other was discovered in a garage.
Hundreds were forced to evacuate the airport around 6:00pm Tuesday evening, the Florida Times-Union reported, and were allowed to return five hours later. The paper, citing a law enforcement source, said a man had told police that he had a bomb before he was detained by police. Zeljko Causevic, 39, was arrested Wednesday morning and charged with creating the hoax bomb.
Flights out of Jacksonville were resuming normal schedules Wednesday morning, though about half remained canceled or delayed.
