A Montana teacher who admitted to raping his 14-year-old student and received only an outrage-provoking 30-day prison sentence is set to be released from prison.

Stacey Rambold will leave prison Thursday after serving out the short sentence, the Associated Press reports. The sentence, handed down by District Judge G. Todd Baugh, has led to protests and petitions seeking his removal from the bench. Prosecutors have said that the sentence violates state law.

Baugh had said the student, who later committed suicide, was “older than her chronological age” and in “as much in control of the situation” as Rombold. He later apologized for his language but defended the sentence.
