The Washington Navy Yard, where a gunman killed 12 people on Monday, returned to near-normal operations Thursday even as law enforcement officials continue to investigate the Navy reservist’s motives.

Building 197, where the shooting occurred, will remain closed and may take weeks to repair, a Navy official told CNN.

“There is blood everywhere,” the official said. “There is damage everywhere.”

The base gym, which is being used as a staging area for an FBI investigation, will also be closed, the Associated Press reports.

The Department of Veterans Affairs said Wednesday that the gunman, Aaron Alexis, had visited two VA hospitals in late August complaining of insomnia, but he said at the time that he was not considering harming others and that he was not depressed.
