Recall Vote Throws Wrench in Colorado’s Liberal Shift

A historic vote sends a message to gun control advocates that the West still has a wild streak

Colorado State Senators Angela Giron and and John Morse who are facing recall elections.

Any wind still left in the sails of gun control advocates likely died—at least for now—when Colorado voters successfully recalled two state senators on Sept. 10. This stern punishment came after lawmakers in the Mile High state toughened regulations on background checks and limited the size of ammo magazines.

It was a rout. Billionaire New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg led a team of deep-pocketed out-of-towners in trying to rescue state senate president John Morse and his colleague Sen. Angela Giron, both Democrats. But the grassroots rebellion, fanned and funded by the National Rifle Association and other conservative groups, was more motivated. Said Tim Knight, a leader of the uprising: “Tonight is a victory for the people of the state of Colorado, who have been subject to the overreach of a Democrat agenda on guns, taxes and accountability.”

Colorado has been a success story for liberals in recent years as migration and immigration swelled Front Range cities like Denver and Boulder. Shaken by the Columbine rampage and the Aurora movie theater massacre, statehouse Democrats answered President Obama’s State of the Union call for new gun control measures early this year.

That’s when they discovered that the West still has a wild streak. Applications to buy high-capacity firearms jumped by more than 80,000 from the same period a year earlier, as citizens rushed to beat the July 1 deadline in the new law. Sheriffs in 54 of Colorado’s 64 counties joined a lawsuit challenging the new regulations as unworkable and unconstitutional. And the recall caught fire in two places where the liberal tide was never very strong: blue-collar Pueblo and formerly conservative Colorado Springs.

On the same day, Colorado became the first state in the union to pass the regulations necessary to set up a market for legal marijuana sales, so maybe the big story here is about the rise of libertarians demanding less government of all kinds.

No matter how the results are interpreted, though, the Colorado uprising will send a message to lawmakers across the country—and not just about gun control. Recall elections are much easier to organize in the Internet age. In the 137-year history of Colorado, no lawmaker had been successfully recalled until Morse and Giron made it two in one night.

Which is why the GOP never got very enthusiastic about ousting the two Democrats. As Knight told one interviewer: “The Republicans don’t want anything to do with us because they think, ‘Next they’ll recall us’.”

Recall every politician

1. who does not believe the rights in our bill of rights are individual rights

2. who opposes the right to bear arms

3 who opposes freedom of speech of religion for instance those who support hate crime laws for having thoughts or words which are not politically correct

4. who does not oppose the nsa and other parts of government spying on us

5 who supports drone strikes to kill suspects without a fair trial

6. who supports foreign intervention when we are not threatened

7. who supports the irs taking away the money we earn, robbing from the poor to give to the rich

Its time to stand up for freedom and liberty!

the real problem with this article is its overwhelming bias. it should have been about the people who won, who organized, why they did it etc. instead its a mouth piece for those who were defeated....

How sad that common sense gun regulation can't be sustained because boys want their toys. Thank goodness, in my state, Connecticut, we passed some common sense limits after Newtown, and weren't shackled by this romanticized notion of a prairie fire rebellion, that in reality is nothing more than a temper tantrum that says, "Oh yeah? Nobody's gonna tell me what I can do."

It is "Cowards and Murderers" that want to disarm their next "Victims".  Hail to my former home state of Colorado for waking up and casting off the Shackles of Death.

Bless us all we still have a chance to preserve & regain our freedoms!

At this point in time the white male has the numerical advantage

with respect to voting on such gun-related issues.  But the time is fast coming when the white males may not only lose their advantage

they may even become an insignificant minority at which point We,  the People, may finally repeal that cowardly and murderous 2nd. Amendment.

In a truly democratic culture the first commandmant is that “ALL ARE EQUAL” and have the right to vote on all issues pertaining to their governance with their mothers or gaurdians voting on behalf of children who are too young to understand the issues.  Neither the united states nor any other patriarchal country has ever had a truly democratic government nor will they ever.

It is a great day when the people show Washington that they can get together and speak.

Two very important things happened with this recall. It is not about Republican or Democrat its about individuals trying to control the masses. And two, it shows that it is possible for the masses to get together and really make a difference in correcting bad laws. That is extremely significant. Colorado demonstrated to the country that individuals with a common goal can force changes.

The Republicans are right to think ‘Next they’ll recall us’ as long as they continue to be RINOs.

The NRA, the Republicans, Antonin Scalia, Samuel Alito, and Clarence Thomas, should get a little of their own shooting medicine instead of innocent people all the time.  And if Rethuglicans continue to illegally usurp power by recalling elected officials, they should expect a violent wake up call.

the real problem is the lefts disdain for ordinary people, they are seen as dumb, sheep, backward etc. the left is so arrogant that they think that they are the only ones smart enough to run everyone's life. what you are seeing is a repudiation of that arrogance....

think:   I still want gun control. but I agree Congress is not doing what we want for the most part.  We are in the place we are because of them.  How about recalling all of  congress and start over.  Someone once told me Australia had the rule:  If you don't accomplish what you were elected for within two years you are removed from office.  sounds good to me.

There's a lot more than gun control behind this outcome.  It is a wake up call for the ideological far left, not only in Colorado, but at the national level as well.  Thankfully it is what can happen when one party is given too much power which, fueled by uninhibited hubris, results in overreach.  We see this now in our President, his NLRB, EPA, Justice Department, various "czars", and more.

Rise of the patriots! Forget about left and right, R's and D's and any other labels. I don't care who you vote for, but it is time to send a very strong message to Congress. So even if you vote for the same party, please vote against every encumbent. It's time to put people in office who will actually represent us. I don't know who those people are but I damn well know who they aren't!

Think!
Think!

These representatives did not listen to their constituents.  Plain and simple.  They listened and acted according to some other force, other than those that elected them.  Maybe they listened to The President, maybe their party, maybe their hearts.  Who knows- but the successful recall proves that they did not listen to the people that elected them.  A simple reminder to all the elected:  the voters are watching, and listening, and have the power to send you home if you forget who you represent.

LIBERALS, help us out:

Im a life long republican, and I have a request for the LEFT. We just showed you how to do it, NOW WE NEED YOU TO DO IT. We NEED you to recall republicans who push this anti-choice crap. YES, we will support you.. Every single republican I know would vote to recall these anti-choice bible thumpers who have slithered into the republican party....We can help each other out...Its your turn now.

Thank you Colorado.

The NRA played a minor roll in this recall - it was grass roots.

The left played a major roll in trying to stop it - major fail.

I don't care who voted for the added gun control R or D. They were right.  One gun in you home for protection, fine.  AK 47, thirty round clip. Stupid.  No background checks at gun shows Stupid. If I had the money I'd leave this country. I won't be here, but two more generations of this stupidity and the America we knew, when I was proud to be American 1940's to 50's won't exist. Greed, and payoff's by the NRA is how this happened and if that is not un-American, I don't know what is. Glad to be 77 so I won't see the distruction.

Thank you patriots in Colorado. In California you are constantly threatened by lowlifes. An ability to defend yourself from persons that carry guns, to rob and murder you, is an absolute necessity in California. California has early prison release for three time felons, and high crime area warnings, that only tell you that you are about to get robbed and murdered ,and you have no defense whatsoever.

@SmoothEdward1 Edward has nothing to do with "boys want their toys".  It has everything to do with tyrants and their fears.  The more they abuse the rights of the people, the more they FEAR the people and thus further abuse the rights of the people leading to more abuse.  You see the cycle?  Well it leads to death camps, gas chamber, mass graves, etc. and it always starts with disarming the people.

If you believe in Personal Liberty,  then you have to believe in maintaining a Balance of Power between the People vs the Government.  Otherwise the Gov't will have absolute power and as we all know "Absolute Power Corrupts . . . Absolutely"

@kamanalonokapu so the 2nd amendment says we can murder? where does it say that? Also I cant wait until white people become the monority, then maybe , for once, I will quality for some form of assistance. Oh wait, i dont want or need any government assistance. I work for my stuff, including personal security and protection.

sch.txp

One other question. Will "We, the People" include everyone or will it be more like "We, the People that rule over others that don't believe what we believe"?

sch.txp
sch.txp

@kamanalonokapu You think that the people that founded this country were cowards and murderous when they separated from the British?  You don't seem to realize that you wouldn't be able to vote or have any influence in government unless you were part of the elite core in society. Also, assuming you are part of the minority right now, do you not see that as a minority you do have influence. Minority interest groups have all sorts of power. I bet you are just sore that you are not head of one of those groups.

sch.txp
sch.txp

@kamanalonokapu Voting is a right granted to you when you are of legal age. You don't get more voting points for procreation. Your thinking is very primitive patriarchal.

DeeWin

@CameronRobert Hey, I thought the mantra was "elections matter".

Is that only when the leftists win?

sch.txp
sch.txp

@CameronRobert Maybe you missed it, but election recalls are legal. They are legal for recalling both R and D party people. Just because a couple of D people got removed from office doesn't make it illegal. It is people with your "I'm better than you" attitude who go around asserting "any law is illegal when we disagree" is the problem.

@bubba31138  Wrong. Nothing to wake up. The left or "far left" as you refer to is about 50% of the country and growing.  Colorado is a one horse state and this district was already a large majority leaning Right

@concerned.calvin1  the ones in Congress now "kneel" at the ATM machines set up by the controlling interests of the country.

BobJan

@Think!  They were booted out because they didn't listen to the people. That's right. But the fairest way would be to have an addendum stating what it is about any issues and have the "citizenry" vote on it. That way the people would speak. Look at all the money the rich would keep in their pocket and everyone can be happy. No representative represents everyone and this form of government is "bought and paid" for by the lobbyists be they "pro" or "con".

JamesVarney
JamesVarney

@kolohe  The purpose of the second amendment, as clearly stated therein, is not home defense against criminals, it is to properly equip the citizenry to resist Federal tyranny.  A hunting rifle is pretty pitiful for that purpose.

Greed, and payoff's by Bloomberg and his Nazi gun grabber carpetbagger buddies wasn't enough to quiet the peasants who rose with their pitchforks and torches against the Demonic-rats.

sch.txp
sch.txp

@kolohe Assuming that the gun control movement stops at allowing one gun in the home for protection, why does it make any difference whether it is an old 30-30 or MSR, they both are easily able to kill with a single round. By that standard, you shouldn't be in favor of even one gun in the home unless it is a non-lethal variety.

PaulStrat
PaulStrat

@koloheThey left out that the NRA contributed (relatively) very little to this recall. The parties supporting the democrats/against the recall spent 8 times more than their opponents.....and still  lost.

jsgolightly
jsgolightly

@kolohe In the 1940's and 50's you could buy a gun and have it shipped straight to your house.  In the 1940's and 50's, anybody could own a machine gun.  If anything, these recalls put us closer to your beloved Good Old Days.

If anything, I think your just pissed your idea's weren't as popular as you thought.

@KennethHowell  All this coming from the state of the Columbine & Aurora massacre?  Very small state compared to California as far as population is concerned, well maybe for now but thanks to immigration reform Colorado will soon swell with growth.  LOL

BobJan

@jsgolightly @kolohe  one thing you're forgetting is that back then people were rational. back then our politicians were a little bit saner and actually governed the country. today the politicians are all bought and paid for and do whatever they're told no matter how it affects society. back then you could see your Senator or Representative. Today you have to spend $10,000 to talk to them on the phone.  back then there were jobs that paid a living wage so you could raise a family. today you have to own a gun to rob a bank to buy a tank of gas. back then people left their doors unlocked. today they have bars on the windows. back then the FBI was feared. today the FBI fear the gangs. this country has become a third world nation in some parts of the country. back then the country was coming out of WWII and people had pride in their country without having a gun. today you have to have a gun just to live here. The older guy is right, it was fun growing up back then. I know because I'm an older guy too. If I didn't have a key to get in the house I'd put my arm through the "milk chute" and open the door. "Those were the good old days". And you could leave your bike on the driveway and get up in the morning and it would still be there. Yup, those were the good old days.

jsgolightly
jsgolightly

@MiguelRey If I was pro-left,  I sure wouldn't be bragging that "One Day, Colorado will be the Epic Success that California Is!!!"  No better way to scare off the sane than that.

SandyLester

@MiguelRey @KennethHowell So typical of the left. Those insodences were created and advanced by people who were criminals breaking hundrens of gun laws already on the book.

Get a clue.
