‘Swapped’ Kids Forced To Dig Own Graves: Report

Investigation reveals underground 'child-swapping' network where adoptive parents unload unwanted children to other families

When a disabled Chinese girl was adopted by an American couple, she thought she had gotten lucky. But then that couple “re-homed” Nora Gately to a new family, who made their 17 adopted children clean the bathroom with toothbrushes and dig their own graves in the backyard.

Gately, now 26,  was adopted from a Chinese orphanage just before her 13th birthday. But after a few years, her adoptive father took her on a road trip which ended in a “re-homing,” this time with a family in Tennessee.  Gately, who has polio, says her new mother often took away her leg brace as punishment for small infractions.

It’s a horrifying incident, but it’s not an isolated one: An investigation by Reuters and NBC news has uncovered an underground “child-swapping” network, where adoptive parents can offload their unwanted children to other families through Internet chat rooms hosted by Yahoo and Facebook. In one November 2012 post, a Nebraska woman advertised an 11-year old boy she had adopted from Guatemala: “I am totally ashamed to say it but we do truly hate this boy!”

So far Yahoo has removed the chat room following the investigation. Facebook has not yet taken action, according to the report.

I feel sick - stories like this just break my heart. That anyone could be cruel to children is sickening.  Poor journalism or not, these situations are happening and kids are defenseless from animals like these adoptive "parents."

I'm absolutely appalled at  this article.  It has no depth, no context and completely ignores the thousands of adoptions that create loving, happy families.  If you want to write an article, then write the article and not just a cheap headline.  Try, oh please try to be a journalist. Or stop writing and go to work at the donut shop.

I think it was Dateline that did a segment on this recently--interviewed the parents who are now 'ashamed' of themselves. Ya think?

I'd like more confirmation of this report than I've seen so far. If this is the only report, I remain suspicious until there is more evidence.

People give birth for selfish reasons; sometines they adopt for those same reasons.  You will find that many of these people who swapped tried traditional methods of adoption but were reject and then tried other countries.  Foreign adoption agencies will overlook famiies who want disabled kids.

Sometimes these families mean well, but really have no idea what to expect.  I have one child and she consumes every moment of my life, and she is very healthy.  Imagine a disabled child from a different culture.  Not only do you have to raise the child, you have to confront cultural and possible psychological/physcial differences.

I knew that many people breed for all of the wrong reasons, but adopt children for all of the wrong reasons? Come on now.

@GeneAmbeau The writer does not explain the truth about adoption---but neither did you. The truth is there is a war against parents and adoptees who tell the truth.  The truth is adoption law is written by the same people who profit from the trafficking of children. The truth is that if you love the children then you would NEVER object to truth in journalism and a true police investigation to ferret out the bad guys---whom you say are very few.

@GeneAmbeau First of all - being a "journalist" does not mean "telling both sides" in the way that we've become accustomed to. Being a journalist means telling the story at hand and going with the facts you have and revealing more facts in depth as the story unfolds.

I know advocates of adoption are always up at arms to make sure everyone knows that the majority of adoptions end well. But it's important to know that this is not always on the case and to be on the lookout for warning signs seemingly responsible adults who cannot and should not be trusted with children.

@joelp77440 Right, right, they mean well. That's why make them dig their own graves, take away their crutches and pass them around like dogs.

@TanmayLololAnaisPradhan @joelp77440Thankfully most Americans aren't like this.  I"m not a fan of the U.S., but I know that the majority of Americans would never dream of doing this to children.
