A 107-year-old man was shot and killed in a standoff with a SWAT team at his home in Pine Bluff, Ark., police say.

Responding to a domestic disturbance on Saturday, police were told that Monroe Isadore had pointed a weapon at two other people. Officers identified themselves, but Isadore fired at them. Supervisors were called in to negotiate with the man, but those negotiations soon collapsed.

“S.W.A.T. inserted gas into the room, after it was evident negotiations were unsuccessful, in hopes Isadore would surrender peacefully,” according to a statement from the Pine Bluff police. “When the gas was inserted into the room, Isadore fired rounds at the S.W.A.T. officers that had inserted the gas from outside a bedroom window.”

Afterward, the officers broke into the home, breached the bedroom door, and threw a “distraction device” into the room to stun the suspect, according to the police report. He fired more rounds at the officers and, after an exchange of gunfire, Isadore was killed.

Pauline Lewis, who roomed in the home with Isadore told KTHV-TV that she had approached Isadore about moving into a new apartment, and that’s when he grew hostile.

“I just had to call the police,” she said. “I couldn’t do anything else with it.”
