Less than two months after George Zimmerman was acquitted of the murder of Trayvon Martin, his wife, Shellie, has filed for divorce. The filing came just days after she told reporters that the trial had strained her marriage, reports ABC News.

After Zimmerman, 29, was charged in April 2012, the couple had to live in hiding and were received death threats. “I think we have been pretty much like gypsies,” Shellie Zimmerman said. “We’ve lived in a 20-foot-trailer in the words scared every night that someone was going to find us and that we’d be out in the woods alone and that it would be horrific.”

Shellie Zimmerman, 26, pleaded guilty last month to perjury after lying about the couple’s finances when the judge was setting bail for her husband. George Zimmerman did not accompany Shellie to the courtroom that day, and she said afterwards that she felt “very much alone” without his support. “I stood by my husband through everything and I kind of feel like he left me with a bunch of broken glass that I’m supposed to now assemble,” she told ABC News, blaming their split on his “selfish” attitude. For her perjury role, she will have to serve 100 hours of community service and one year of probation.

But she maintains that she believes her husband’s claim that he shot and killed Martin in self defense. She added the most hurtful thing about the trial was people accusing her husband of being a “murderer or some sort of racist.”
