Abortion Clinics Closing at Record Pace

More than 200 state-level legal restrictions since 2011

Nearly one in 10 abortion clinics in the United States have shut down or stopped performing the procedure since 2011, Bloomberg News reports.

The precipitous drop in abortion providers comes amid a hostile political climate for clinics and their allies ever since Republicans took over the U.S. House and many state legislatures in 2010. Since then, more than 200 state-level abortion restrictions have been passed into law.

In North Dakota and Mississippi, the sole remaining clinics are in jeopardy as courts have temporarily blocked state legislation requiring clinic doctors obtain hospital privileges.

The abortion debate should not revolve around "when life begins". A sperm cell or an egg cell on their own are also living cells. Yet we dispense with these regularly without any moral outcry.

The only valid argument about the ethics of abortion (apart from why are we still having this debate in the 21st century?) should be concerned with the sentience of the foetus. Sentience is the ability to feel, perceive and be conscious / have subjective experiences.

Experiencing pain (and fear) requires conscious interpretation by the brain. Given that the foetus’ brain is far from fully developed during the first trimester, it lacks the emotional and cognitive elements of experiencing pain – i.e. consciousness.

Pain perception begins with the nerve endings in the skin. From there pain impulses run through the spinal cord to the brain stem and into the thalamus which transmits the impulses to the cerebral cortex – the thinking and feeling part of the brain. A highly developed cortex is required to perceive pain signals. At Week 13, not even the brain stem and thalamus of the foetus are functional.

Thus, the current consensus of scientists and medical groups (such as Britain’s Royal College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology) is that conscious awareness of pain cannot occur in fetuses until at least 26 weeks gestation (i.e. more than 6 months into the pregnancy).

During the first trimester of gestation, peripheral nerve endings that are connected to the spinal cord, allow the foetus to react to touch and other stimuli. However, this is a simple reflex response that has no conscious awareness associated with it. There’s no experience of pain because the nerve circuit is not interacting with the brain.

Pictures and video footage of squirming, aborted foetuses would have you believe otherwise.

Given the above scientific facts, we must not permit religious agendas to propel women’s sovereignty back into the dark ages.

@RFKA   Do you really think the GOTP coat hanger crowd is going to stop abortion?

I'll let a bunch of politicians who otherwise couldn't care less about me control my bodily autonomy and most personal decisions right after you do.
