Kidnapping Survivor and Captor Were Pen Pals

They traded up to 13 messages on the day of the abduction

California kidnapping survivor Hannah Anderson and her captor exchanged dozens of letters, text messages and phone calls in the years leading up to her abduction, Anderson said Thursday.

Anderson, 16, said on NBC’S the Today show that she relied on James DiMaggio for emotional support when she was fighting with her mother, and that their exchanges were meant “just to help me through tough times.” They traded up to 13 messages on the day of the abduction. DiMaggio was a friend of the family picking her up from camp when he kidnapped her.

DiMaggio, who it is now believed may have actually been Anderson’s biological father, was killed Aug. 10 as authorities rescued Anderson after almost a week in captivity. Anderson said she is recovering after the ordeal, in which DiMaggio is also suspected of killing her mother and brother.

“In the beginning, I was a victim,” she said. “But now knowing everyone out there’s helping me, I consider myself a survivor instead.”

This piece of "journalism" should be on somebody's personal blog, not in a respected news magazine.  Sensationalized, distorted, poorly sourced. Shame on you, Time.

Hannah Anderson help this man murder her family, because she's white, she will get away with it.

What a twist in the story every day and the hunger of the cheap media to print anything and everything related to Hannah Andersen. It was a story full of action, thrill and suspense. But the bottom line; it was a routine American family drama, dishonest love affair, illegitimate children and so on.. Soon she will sign for the book rights and Hollywood Movies, and finally may be Hustler or Playboy. Continue watching, reading and listening this drama for a while, unless a new one come.

Whoaa..Has time turned trashy. "Pen Pals" ...sounds so... creepy. That expression is reserved for anonymous friends & secret lovers in the days before email & texts. And "now believed may have actually been Anderson's biological father..." ..by whom? Psycho DiMaggio's family is pouring salt on the wound and calling for DNA tests to justify his act of selfish insanity. Nobody else seems to be making that "belief" accusation. Time...you must be slumping in the online world of "journalism" and posting glaring steamy headlines to get attention.

Shame on Charlotte Alter  and Time for writing and printing this story.  Hannah's father met kiddnapper before Hannah's mom met him.  Hannah's mom was already 6 months pregnant with Hannah at that time.   Kidnapper was living with grandmother at the time he made her his beneficiary.  His living situation could have played a part in his decision.  Hannah's father's DNA was used to identify her brother's body.  Lastly,  the rumor of paternity started with kidnappers's sister suggesting her brother was Hannah's father - and now the media,  Time included,  cares more about shock factor than facts and zero care for Hannah.

@TIME She says they were pen pals because she was going through a tough time with her mother? This is going to get interesting.
