Anthony Weiner’s Brutal Week

The New York City mayoral candidate has been reeling since his latest sexting disclosures

Anthony Weiner leaves a campaign stop at the Nan Shan Senior Center to meet the press, in the Queens borough of New York, July 29, 2013.

It keeps getting worse for Anthony Weiner. Nearly a week after acknowledging that he exchanged lewd messages with as many as three women since he resigned from Congress over similar behavior, the New York City mayoral candidate has been pilloried by rivals, abandoned by his campaign manager and pummeled in the polls, his front-runner status all but a distant memory.

The latest sign of Weiner’s fall came Monday, when a Quinnipiac University poll found him in fourth place in the seven-candidate race for the Democratic nomination. Just 16% of likely Democratic primary voters said they would vote for Weiner — a 10-point drop from a July 24 poll that he led.

Perhaps more troubling for Weiner, a majority of the poll’s respondents said he should drop out of the race and 65% felt that his personal behavior is a legitimate campaign issue and not a private matter with his wife. This followed a weekend during which the manager of his campaign quit, reportedly after being surprised by Weiner’s latest revelations, and former members of the Obama and Clinton Administrations criticized him on the Sunday political talk shows.

“His negatives in the electorate are so high you have to believe that his growth is limited,” says Scott Levenson, a New York Democratic strategist who worked on David Dinkins’ winning mayoral campaign in 1989. “And that in combination with his character challenges, with his late entry into race, with his lack of institutional support of any kind, makes the challenge of him becoming mayor too steep a hill to a climb.”

Weiner has been adamant that he plans to stay in the race until the primary election on September 10. On Monday, shortly before the latest poll results were released, Weiner sent a solicitation e-mail to supporters that couched him as a victim of the press and others outside of the city who had called for his resignation. “A lot of people who don’t have a vote want to decide who the next Mayor will be,” it read, “If you’d like to help me fight back, please donate.”

The biggest beneficiary of Weiner’s downfall has been city-council speaker Christine Quinn, who has led the polls taken after the latest sexting disclosures. On NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, Quinn tried multiple times to dodge questions about whether Weiner should resign before finally acknowledging that she thought he had “disqualified himself” to be mayor. At a campaign event on Monday in Williamsburg, Quinn tried again to keep the onus on her candidacy. “This race is about the future, not former Congress member Weiner’s past,” she said.

So long as Weiner stays in the race, that may be wishful thinking. As Weiner continues campaigning, he has struggled to shift the focus from his scandals. At a Friday event in the Staten Island yard of a man whose home was damaged by Hurricane Sandy, Weiner was asked just one question about the topic. He then allowed general questions and, quickly deluged by scandal queries, snapped at a reporter inquiring about his chances. “I’ve answered that six times,” a seemingly agitated Weiner said. “You want me to go again for you?”

Weiner has endured similar questions at every public event since the latest disclosures, and they are wearing on both the candidate and his campaign. “It is hard to get my message out,” Weiner admitted after the Staten Island event. “There is going to reach a point fairly soon when I’m going to say, I’ve talked enough about it.”

This man is sick. Just how sick can be measured by the fact that after getting caught red handed AGAIN he still thinks he is qualified to be the mayor of New York. I would feel sorry for his wife if she wasn't just using him as a vehicle to advance her own political career.

Weiner, you need to hang it up and zip it up, in more ways than one. You are done. Your EGO tells me because you continue on this train wreck that is OVER!

As a feminist Democrat who loves New York City (and lived there for 5 years), I think Weiner should drop out, not because cybersex is an unforgivable sin but because his extracurricular activities are a distraction from the real issues- and more importantly, he's lied to the public on too many occasions for him to have any credibility anymore.

As a humorist, I hope he stays in public view - I could never come up with anything as funny as Carlos Danger or any of the other ridiculous details that keep emerging!  (Here's some musical advice to Weiner and all of his cohorts, who need to be reminded to "Zip It Up" - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=z1i4qsAvu64)

Enough about this dirt bag already.  Move on to more important news!

It's not that people think his 'private' matters are public matters. It's that this guy showed poor judgement considering his standing in the community. If a regular joe shmoe did this it wouldn't be damaging to his/her employment (maybe to their family, however).

His wife's support only showed that she is supporting him to continue his career and she is vested in that because she has a child with him and that is all.

I feel bad for the guy if he has some kind of sex addiction but just like any other addiction one must seek help so it doesn't destroy your life.

Weiner should continue to election day as an independent.

If you are a politician, you don't have a private life.  Rightly or wrongly, everything a politician does is going to inform who maintains and succeeds to power.  A politician's "private life" can have a tremendous social and political impact.   If public service is your choice, than serve the public.  Otherwise, go work on K street and do what you want in your free time.

Writers and good writing cost less than printing and mailing. I hope that as

Time makes its transition from paper to media the magazine changes from thin paper back to heavy writing;

I liked the teacher that nailed him on his campaign trail. If she as a teacher were to do that, sexting thing, she'd be out of a job. But HE wants us to disregard it?? Sure....

The "VICTIM" of the #AnthonyWeiner Sexting Scandal, @sydneyelainexo, according to @Quinn4NY, @NOW_NYC, @EmilysList & pseudo #Feminists is pursing an XRated career with #Vivid Entertainment so give me a break that this Sausage Hound is a victim already.

Weiner is waging his own personal war on women.

I don't care what these people do in their personal lives, as long as they perform their jobs with excellence.

Imagine how many famous people in history would have been ostracized by our "New Puritan Society" if people would have known more about their private lives.

The American Taliban is hard at work exposing the sins of others to detract attention away from their own.

I'm sure this won't be the last we see of Anthony's Weiner.

He's got problems with impulsiveness, problems with lying and problems with treating women badly.

In politics you get to have any two of those things.  But not all three.

@TheSmartestMan I don't know how much the "dead woman or a live boy" situation really applies any more.  The real problem seems to be that he's "showing it" rather indiscriminately, uninvited, and unwisely.

@CieloPerdomo it is not the same.  he was not sexting with a minor.  he did not even have sex.  it is really none of our business.  sad that everyone wants to destroy a born leader over such a trivial issue.  the puritan republiban is back in full force obstructing progress.

RamonRoman

@Fastgirl Doesn't almost every man want to wage a personal war on women? The rest are Hypocrates.

aztecian

@Norm54 yeah...the rethuglican taliban has this puritan agenda...always telling everyone how to live their lives while they're out polluting our water and air.  I think weiner has done something of such low proportion, it is not even news worthy.  But the rightwing puritans want blood so they continue to stir sh*t...the one thing they are really good at.

Norm54

@SgtBilko  "Treating women badly"????

I don't think he's sending these women photos against their will.

It takes two to tango in a situation like this. So that one is out.

That leaves just two.

He should do very well as a politician.

@aztecian @CieloPerdomo What a moron as usual it not about the dummys sex life it is about his judgment, which he lacks, born leader my ass, he is a nut case.

@aztecian @CieloPerdomo "He did not even have sex"!? The man has proven beyond any shadow of a doubt that he is a patholigical liar and manipulator and you say that this is none of our business!?

@aztecian @CieloPerdomo correct, he only sent text and pictures, while mark sanford admitted to having "one night stands" with women and having affairs, which he still is, taxpayers are still paying for sanfords woman, so let weiner run for office and good luck to him

@aztecian @CieloPerdomo YOU miss the point. As members of our society, we ARE held to a standard of behavior that CLEARLY would result in serious consequences for many of us if we break those rules. I wouldn't have to have sex with anyone. Even if I were to post a naked picture of myself to a friend (sexting) THAT IS considered a crime and I would get fired. Why is Weiner so special?

@RamonRoman @Fastgirl as a man i do not want to wage war on woman, i want to love and respect and i am no hypocrate . Must be the italian blood in me.

@aztecian @Norm54 Are you trying to tell us Time magazine is the voice of the right? And that candidate's lies and perversions shouldn't be reported?

Piacevole
Piacevole

@Norm54 @SgtBilko One of the predilections of the flasher is to try to find targets who would be startled and shocked by the flashing.

If someone just looked at it and said, "Huh.  It's a penis.  How about that?" he'd be mightily disappointed.

Assuming the recipient "wanted" this is like assuming that someone who is mugged actually wanted to be mugged.

Piacevole
Piacevole

@RamonRoman @Fastgirl "An answer to that?"  Who can say?  She may be in denial, she may think that somehow it will pay off in the end, she may think he'll "get over it"  (compulsives rarely do), she may see it as a sort of bond between her and Hillary Clinton (who probably wishes the Weiners would assume a much lower profile) or perhaps she sees what he is and thinks that's all she deserves.  Perhaps his wife actually loves him, despite his adolescent behavior.

Now, tell me, if you disapprove of a woman "generalizing," why would you think that I would know why another woman might do something?  That is the very essence of untoward generalization..

RamonRoman
RamonRoman

@Fastgirl Why do you women generalize?  If a man in a trenchcoat, naked inside, goes on the street showing his nakedness to every woman, definitely this guy has a problem in his head. What the politician did was to show his big package, hidden by the underwear, to a certain woman. Well, this woman was offended with this, but not offended when they use to talk, I suppose, before. Now caught talking dirty to other women he knew is a personal matter. Now, Why his wife continues supporting him? You as a woman should have an answer for that.

RamonRoman
RamonRoman

@Piacevole @RamonRoman @Fastgirl Oh, yes, you indicated that women are not to be considered sexual objects, that why I answered to you. We are all sexual objects, but with the difference that as human beings we feel a strong affinity, love, with a special woman that we want to share for life (sometimes, a week, a year, or many years) and to procreate children. But to procreate children, Do you need to be married? So, We prefer to marry, just to be recognized as couple by the rest of the tribe, or to just be recognized for certain perks in the  law, or to unite the incomes and live a pleasant life, until love goes away. Many a time this love lives until the couple die. But if one the mates die, why many times the mate that is alive marries again? Wasn't it supposed that the first love would last forever? What about that the mate that was left alive needs a to have a woman to satisfy his or her sexual urges? I could write so much but this is enough. You could say that I am a cynic, but I prefer to be called a realistic man.

Piacevole
Piacevole

@RamonRoman @Piacevole @Fastgirl Not at all, and I have indicated nothing to lead you to that conclusion.  I do, however, consider that in this society, ast this time, sending crotch shots of oneself to women is ill-advised behavior for someone with political ambitions.  And I suspect that the electorate of New York City agrees with that evaluation, given his plummeting ratings post exposure.

Fastgirl
Fastgirl

If we wouldn't accept someone going around in a trench coat flashing women why should we accept Weiner's behavior? What are the chances of his behavior escalating to something more perverse and dangerous?

RamonRoman
RamonRoman

@Piacevole @RamonRoman @Fastgirl Ah come on, Piace, Do you think that a couple get married only for companionship? What do you know that every married couple do in the confinity of their bedroom? Only the missionary position?

Piacevole
Piacevole

@RamonRoman @Fastgirl Speak for yourself, Mr. Ramon.  There are men who are at ease with and fond of women.

I've known quite a few who considered women interesting companions, not merely sexual objects.  Mr. Weiner is nothing but a flasher, using the internet instead of the standard trenchcoat.  He has reduced himself to an absurdity.
