Trial Balloon

President Obama is considering pulling all 63,000 U.S. troops still in Afghanistan out by next summer, according to a story in Tuesday’s New York Times.

Apparently, President Obama is piqued over being dissed by Afghan President Hamid Karzai.

The 2,060 Americans who have died in and around Afghanistan since 2001 — and the 15 million women subject to Taliban brutality absent some limited U.S. residual force to protect them — apparently not so much.

Actually, this is what is known in Washington as a trial balloon, designed to signal U.S. resolve to straighten out the mess that Afghanistan has been for, oh, about the last 35 years (beats LBJ’s strategy of signaling North Vietnam with B-52s). Plus, it’s not even a new trial balloon.

As such, watch for a notional Hellfire missile fired from a metaphysical Predator drone to shoot it down soon.
