Improvised explosive devices are the curse that keeps on giving.

The Pentagon announced Thursday that it has established the Center for Neuroscience and Regenerative Medicine Brain Tissue Repository for Traumatic Brain Injury.

“Little is known about the long-term effects of traumatic brain injury on military service members,” Dr. Daniel Perl, a neuropathologist and director of the brain tissue repository, says.

Perl says “several hundred” samples will be needed to conduct the research needed. “Specimens will be obtained from deceased service members,” he says, “whose families have consented to donate the brain tissue for use in TBI research.”

The Defense Department calls “the world’s first brain-tissue repository.”

That may be because the U.S. is first in military medical research. Or it may be because no other country needs it.
