Flag Day, on the cusp of Father’s Day weekend, makes this the perfect day to read Stephen Rodrick’s paean to his Navy EA-6B-pilot-father, over on Slate.

As someone who grew up in a non-military family close to Quonset Point Naval Air Station in Rhode Island, Battleland recalls the strangeness of living in a neighborhood where Navy families moved in and out with the precision and regularity of the Blue Angels that flew overhead, and of fathers who often went away.
