Peeping Sergeant 1st Class (First Class, Indeed)

Cadets march at West Point.

Last week, the Army removed Sergeant First Class Michael McClendon from his assignment at the U.S. Military Academy for allegedly videoing female cadets at West Point, sometimes while showering.

The Army apparently only owned up to this latest sexual embarrassment Wednesday when Thom Shanker of the New York Times heard about it, and went to the Army to confirm it.

McClendon, a combat engineer who has served since 1990, is charged under the Uniform Code of Military Justice with indecent acts, dereliction in the performance of duty, cruelty and maltreatment, and actions prejudicial to good order and discipline.

He served at West Point from July 2009 until last week, and “is involved in an on-going investigation for possession of inappropriate images taken without consent,” the Army said. “The Criminal Investigation Division of the United States Army is contacting individuals who may have information relevant to the allegations in this case, as well as notifying everyone involved.” He videoed at least a dozen female cadets without their knowledge.

At West Point, McClendon served as a tactical noncommissioned officer, where he was responsible for the health and welfare of a 125-strong cadet company. Such an NCO is supposed to “assist each cadet in balancing and integrating the requirements of physical, military, academic and moral-ethical programs,” the West Point website says.

McClendon, from Blakely, Ga., is highly-decorated soldiers, having earned the Combat Action Badge, the Bronze Star Medal, four Iraqi Campaign Medals, nine Army Commendation Medals, the Army Achievement Medal, the NATO medal, a pair of National Defense Service Medals, a Joint Meritorious Unit Award, a Valorous Unit Award, the Army Superior Unit Award, three Armed Forces Expeditionary Medals, four Southwest Asia Service Medals, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, the Armed Forces Service Medal, three NCO Professional Development Ribbons, an Army Service Ribbon, the Overseas Service Ribbon, an Air Assault Badge, and the Sapper Tab.

He obviously can follow orders, and knows how to be a soldier.

Too bad he apparently missed all the sexual-harassment training.

He also earned the Army’s Good Conduct Medal. Seven times.

Poor reporting Mark. Did you do ANY research? For instance, did you find out that Sgt. McLendon is under treatment for PTSD? Did you bother to find out if he had ANY history of abusive behavior in his more than 19 years of decorated service? Were you awarded your pulitzer the way  Comrade Obama was awarded his Nobel based on expected performance rather than actual performance? Sgt. McLendon actually performed bravely and meritoriously for over 19 years without a blemish (at least there have been no reports of any). Yet you write condemning him based on hearsay evidence. Meanwhile you and your ilk at Pravda West have done nothing to call out for due process for the victims of the  Fort Hood terrorist. Keep up the good work Mark. Thankfully reportage like this is the reason Time and it's retarded sister the NY Times will be non-existent in a few more years.

I dont think you are allowed to call the Fort Hood terrorist a terrorist.  Oh crap, I just called him a terrorist.   I better go check my taxes, I have a feeling the IRS will be calling soon.

This is the wave of the future, lads and lasses, as the military gets used to the notion of UNISEX distribution of rights and responsibilities. Boys will be boys. Girls will be girls. Only when people get used to walking around undressed as in a nudist camp, will the pursuit of forbidden peeking lose its appeal. Of course, at that time we will have reverted to the animals we came from in the first place and can once again take to the trees.

No really -- important national news that deserves to supplant the "scandals". A sergeant video taping. Some while showering. Oh the humanity!

I have forgotten that three of the most powerful investigative organizations in the world, parts of our current Administration, took actions that could have influenced the 2012 Presidential election.

Hey, wink-wink, nudge-nudge -- do ya have any of the videos? Actually most of them would not interest -- the majority of the assaults are against men, even though the news is shaped to spotlight predatory males against female soldiers.

@meddevguy

You are forgetting that women make up only 15% of the troops. So even if it's true that the total numbers are roughly equal, women are still proportionally affected more than 6 times more.

@meddevguy I'd love to see your statistics supporting that the "majority of assaults are against men".  Sounds to me like something you heard one time and believed, especially in light of so many recent sexual assaults against women.  Regardless, are you trying to condone this behavior?

@Arimathean @meddevguy The "statistics" do not reflect the realities of sexual abuse in the military. Sen. Collins and her comrades in the news media would like you to believe that it is all male on female abuse and of course present the statistics to prove this. However, what is left out is male on male and female on female abuse. When one uses the privilege of rank to commit an act of abuse it doesn't matter what sex is involved. What matters is that the chain of command breaks down as trust between superiors and subordinates erodes.

@Arimathean @spe651ny @meddevguy  Read carefully. I did not support the notion that the majority of reports is against men. I clearly stated that the "statistics" are not representative of reality. To quote that genius Hillary "What difference does it make" who is being abused? What matters is that the chain of command breaks down. When the chain of command breaks down integrity and trust are lost and in the military those are the two most important qualities. By the way, you present no evidence that there are so many recent sexual assaults against women other than the cited newspaper reporting. Remember, there is all kinds of abuse not jst abuse against women.

@spe651ny @Arimathean @meddevguy   So you are making claims that you have no evidence for (at least, nothing but circumstantial evidence).  I'm sorry, but Meddev and you cannot make the claim that "the majority of the assaults are against men" without providing some support.

I heard he was making the tapes for the CIC and the AG in conjunction with their covert investigation of non civilian journalism.  Also it has been reported by reliable Pentagon sources that those responsible for this operation have a predilection for big white boobies.

Based on what I've been reading about sexual harrassment in the military, this 1st Sergeant was probably collecting video for the Officer's Club.  The military appears to be infested with these jerks and the chain of command allows it to happen.

Mr. Thompson;  In your introductory sentence you stat that SFC McClendon video taped female cadets while he was showering.  One wonders what they were doing in there with him.

I think he is probably a TAC NCO, not a "tactical" NCO.  TAC stands for Training, Advising, and Counseling.  TAC officers and NCOs are responsible for students in Army courses similar to how Drill Sergeants oversee recruits during basic training.

@inachu  Of course you would say BS....you're a male.  How about if they video taped your daughter in a shower without her consent?  Different story, right?  MEN!
