The Marathon Bombing: Gunfights, Blasts and a Manhunt Shut Down Boston

One suspect is apparently dead while another is on the run after a night filled with drama, bloodshed and uncertainty

Police officers walk near a crime scene April 19, 2013, in Watertown, Mass. A tense night of police activity that left a university officer dead on campus just days after the Boston Marathon bombings and amid a hunt for two suspects caused officers to converge on a neighborhood outside Boston, where residents heard gunfire and explosions.

Everyone expected the perpetrators of the Boston Marathon bombing to have fled the area soon after the attack. But just hours after the Federal Bureau of Investigation released their photos, the two suspects were apparently tracked to Watertown, a western suburb of Boston, where one was killed and one remains at large. One police officer is dead and another has been badly wounded as authorities mount a massive manhunt to find the remaining “terrorist.” The T subway line, one of the metropolitan area’s main arteries, was shut down while tens of thousands of residents in the affected communities were ordered to stay home. Everyone in Watertown, Newton, Waltham, Belmont, Cambridge and the Allston and Brighton neighborhoods of Boston proper have been told to stay inside with their doors locked.

The Associated Press reported that the two suspects came from Dagestan near Chechnya. The AP said the duo had been living legally in the U.S. for at least a year. TIME has not been able to confirm the allegation.

The dramatic events began Thursday at about 10:30 p.m. when a 7-Eleven minimart in Cambridge was robbed. The suspects in that robbery caught on the 7-Eleven cameras match the descriptions of suspects 1 and 2 in the Boston Marathon bombings sought by the FBI, police said. Soon after, the suspects allegedly shot and killed a Massachusetts Institute of Technology cop and carjacked a Mercedes SUV.

Police tracked the Mercedes to Watertown, where a shootout ensued. In a dramatic scene just after midnight, dozens of police vehicles streamed out of Boston along Memorial and Storrow Drives, flanking the Charles River, west to Watertown. Police boats were in the water. In the shootout, a Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority police officer was shot and is now in critical condition at Mount Auburn Hospital. Suspect 1 was killed. “During the course of that pursuit, several incendiary devices were discharged from the car at the police officers,” superintendent of the state police Colonel Timothy Alben said. According to the Associated Press, doctors at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center said they treated a man with possible blast injuries and multiple gunshot wounds—though they would not confirm if this was suspect 1.

Witnesses in Watertown reported hearing between one and three loud explosions between 12:15 a.m. and 1:00 a.m. Friday. At least one “lit up the night sky,” says Adam Healy, a behavioral specialist who lives near where the shootout took place. Others heard 20 to 50 gunshots. “It was crazy. It was like bam bam bam bam bam,” says Shawn Bertulli, 28, who lives in Waltham but was visiting a friend in Watertown.

In the hours following the shootout, hundreds of police converged on Watertown, some from as far as Tewksbury, 25 miles away. Most wore flak jackets and carried flashlights. As authorities moved the press back a few blocks from where the shootout took place, an explosion could be heard. “You hear that?” a cop said to the horde of press and onlookers. “That’s why you need to move back. It’s for your own safety.”

A 20-block area of east Watertown around Dexter Avenue and School and Laurel streets has been locked down as police go door to door searching for suspect 2, said Watertown police chief Edward Deveau. Authorities have also released an updated photo of the suspect wearing a gray hooded sweatshirt. “The most important message that we are doing right now is for public safety and for the safety of the people in that neighborhood,” Alben said. “We are asking everyone to shelter in place for the time being, not to leave their homes and if they see something suspicious other than a police officer coming to their door, they should call 911 immediately.”

Bomb squads have been called in to “make safe anything that was discharged from that vehicle,” Alben said. “Some of them went off. Some, we believe, did not.”

(TIME: Boston Marathon Digital Issue)

The suspect at large is believed to be armed and extremely dangerous. The suspects were identified by law enforcement officials and family members as Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev, ethnic Chechen brothers from Dagestan, which neighbors Chechnya in southern Russia.  “We believe this to be a terrorist,” Boston police commissioner Ed Davis said. “We believe this to be a man who has come here to kill people. We need to get him into custody.”

This is how I feel. If someone, anyone, is found guilty of blowing people up then they should get the same fate. I don't care what religion you are. I don't care what race/color you are. You do the damage then you die by the damage.

Imagine this terrorist hid someplace in Boston that denied conventional access. POTUS orders his takeout  by a Drone plane. The terrorist is killed successfully.  But collateral damage inevitably includes innocent American lives including women and children. Could we live with that ? Does the end justify the means? Happens all the time on the Af-Pak border..

Law enforcement didn't do a very good job. They had both suspects pinned down in a gunfight and somehow one of them managed to escape by driving away. Didn't anyone think to secure the exits or give chase?

Hundreds of law enforcement went "door to door" for some odd reason, as if the suspect would be sitting at the dinner room table waiting for them when they arrived. Had they done a slightly more invasive search (ahem, backyard), they would have discovered a blood trail leading to a boat in a Watertown backyard where the suspect was hiding under a tarp, not far from where the original shootout occurred.

And this happened after residents were told it was safe for everyone to go outside their homes. It was only after a homeowner went outside his backyard and found the blood on his boat that lead the suspect's capture. Had law enforcement done a thorough search (not just knocking on people's doors) of each home and the surrounding area of each and every home, turning over every rock and checking every tool shed, they would have discovered the suspect sooner and not put the public at risk.

19 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, 20 idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, 21 envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.........................................................

How does the magazine manage to write this whole article, without once mentioning that the brothers are fundamentalist Muslims, with quotes from extremist Mullahs all over their Facebook pages?

Oh no, it's not Muslims we need to be watching.

Apparently a legal immigrant is allowed to stay even after a domestic dispute arrest back in 2009 by the dead brother.  Immigrants who are granted the PRIVILEGE  of being allowed to stay here must be interested in assimilating with our culture, be on a path to naturalization and keep themselves out of trouble.  Our LACK of any meaningful management of foreign nationals played a large part in this terrorist being here in the first place.  His records show that he would go back to his little hellhole of a country for up to 6 months at a time.  And absolutely NO RED FLAGS were raised.  WHEN ARE WE GOING TO GET SERIOUS ABOUT CONTROLLING IMMIGRATION?

I see the White House has activated their 'situation room'.

For one guy?  Really?  The only reason to do this is so there's a way to get a foot in the door when it comes time to take credit for ending it.

With all that's going on in Boston, wonder how all those people "sheltering in place" behind their 1/8" glass windows are feeling about gun control right about now.

Now just because these guys are muslim terrorists don't mean they are muslim terrorists.

I'm listening to the police scanners online from this incident and it reminds me of the Dorner rogue cop scene.  That played out just a few miles from me.  At the end of the highway, about twenty miles from where it ended there was at least a hundred cops and all kinds of emergency folk.  Even Fed dept of Forestry.  Any car that could muster flashing lights was lined up ready to go

In this one there's like 8000 cops and every LEO/federal alphabet agency there looking for one guy.  How long do you think you would last.  I figure I'm good for about twenty minutes on the run.

I think that isn't just the inmigration issue, I'm from México and I love to travel that's why I apply to a turist visa and the process to get it is very complicated, expensive (160 USD at least) and long.

See, sometimes we wait several months and in order to get an appointment, then once you paind and got interviewed the US goverment keeps our passports in order to verify people backgrounds and authenticity.  Still, Do you think that your goverment doesn't spend enough resourses in this matter?  .

However, I think that the problem resides in the politics, you can buy a gun as easely as buying candies, and the education doesn´t promotes love and respect among each other.  And face it, the US is always in the middle of other countrys matters and people doesn't like to be under survillance. What about the guy who killed all those people in the teather or the others killing people in schools.  They weren't inmigrants.

I felt terrible about the victims specially the boy and I hope this kind of things doesn´t ocurr again.

(Sorry for my grammar, have a nice day everybody)

Kizar_Sozay
Kizar_Sozay

@DonQuixotic @Kizar_Sozay  Isn't MIT a 'gun-free' zone?

My sincerest hope is this guy breaks into a home and a homeowner guns him down with an AR-15 with a 30 round magazine.  If you saw the video of the shootout put up by some local woman, the army of law enforcement fired off in excess of a hundred rounds.  Not many of those police fired rounds hit the intended target but they did hit something in that residential neighborhood.

 Remember the two incidents with that renegade cop in LA?  Two Asian women delivering newspapers fifty miles away from the actual scene had something like 120 rounds fired at them.  Another driver cleared a police checkpoint and within a minute police fired over a hundred rounds at him.  I've seen pictures of SWAT teams carrying AR-15s with sights mounted backwards on them and the magazines installed facing the wrong way.  Remember in NYC when some guy was stabbing people on the street.  Cops showed up and fired over 70 rounds, hitting him once.

 When seconds count, the police are just minutes away.

Actually, here in SF, at least one media commentator suggested that since Boston is well known as a 'progressive' city, the bombers were almost certainly right wing Christian extremists like the OK city bombers.

Kizar_Sozay
Kizar_Sozay

@DonQuixotic @packardday

The media's goal in this is to be first to break a story, accuracy be damned.  Arrests have been made, no they haven't.  We have an ID, no we don't. Yes we do.

@grape_crush @Kizar_Sozay @DonQuixotic

I never suggested a vigilante group take to the streets.  I simply suggested that a person in their house with a lunatic on the loose is better off IN THEIR OWN HOME if they can protect themselves with a firearm.  Better than having a TV set and drawn curtains as the last line of defense.

 BTW, you would be surprised at the level of weapons training the police have.  They have to qualify once a year and for most, that's about fifty rounds a year with their service weapon and shotgun.  Not saying they are untrained but it appears their answer is to fire until they are out of bullets.

DonQuixotic
DonQuixotic

@Kizar_Sozay @DonQuixotic

What does any of this have to do with gun control?  Cops are all over the streets of Boston as we speak, one of which died confronting them at MIT.  Take your partisan nonsense elsewhere.

grape_crush
grape_crush

 @Kizar_Sozay@DonQuixotic > Cops showed up and fired over 70 rounds, hitting him once.

And to think that those cops are trained on the proper use of those weapons. Just imagine the carnage if the average group of yahoos re-enacted a circular firing squad.

I repeat, "nobody with half a brain".  Again though we're going back to one wacko being representative of an entire political spectrum; I'll assume then that you agree with Rick Jones that this was all a government staged attack on Boston.
