Attack: April 19, 1995
A bomb hidden in a Ryder rental truck at the Alfred P. Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City explodes shortly after 9 a.m. The massive blast kills 168, including 19 children at a daycare center. A report by the Oklahoma Department of Health puts the injury toll at over 750.
Breakthrough: April 20, 1995
Just as after the World Trade Center bombing two years before, investigators find a piece of the truck in the wreckage that is marked with an ID number. Agents trace the truck to a rental shop in Junction City, Kan., where an employee describes the man who rented it.
Capture: April 21, 1995
Shortly after the bombing, Timothy McVeigh had been pulled over for failing to have a license plate on his car. He was arrested for carrying a concealed weapon and is already in jail on misdemeanor charges when authorities identify him as the renter. His partner, Terry Nichols, surrenders himself the same day.
