Graduation Day at the Navy's lone surviving boot camp at Great Lakes, just outside Chicago.

It has always struck Battleland as a little strange how many sailors come from middle America, far from the nation’s coasts. Here’s the latest example, from Mansfield, Texas.

It’s written by Amanda Rogers for the Mansfield News-Mirror about her son, and brings home the shiver only a parent can feel when she sees her child in a U.S. military uniform for the first time:

The baby who wasn’t supposed to be born, the child who they didn’t know if he would be able to learn, is now a part of the greatest Navy in the history of the world.

Congratulations, Seaman Alex Kowalski.
