Hadiya Pendleton, 15, a student at King College Prep, was killed Tuesday at a Chicago park near a school, authorities said.

Gun violence in Chicago has claimed another teenager who only last week marched with her school band in Washington at President Obama’s inauguration, continuing an escalating trend of deadly shootings on the city’s South Side.

Hadiya Pendleton, 15, an honor student at Chicago’s Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. College Preparatory High School and a majorette in the marching band, was killed midday Tuesday while hanging out with friends after exams in a nearby park, the Chicago Tribune reported. As she was standing under a shelter to get out of the rain, an unidentified male jumped a fence and ran toward her group, firing at them. Pendleton was struck in the back, while another boy was hit in the leg. The shooter then jumped into a car and sped off.

The two teens were taken to a nearby hospital where Pendleton was pronounced dead. The injured boy was in serious condition. Police say the girl was likely an unintended target of the shooting and was not involved with gangs, but some of the teens in her group may have had gang affiliations.

Some of the youths scattered after the shooting, but others stayed behind. Those that did are reportedly not cooperating with police, leaving officials with no description of the attacker or the car he left in. No arrests have been made so far.

King College Prep is one of Chicago’s top magnet schools and its band has performed at several inaugural events. It is located in the city’s Kenwood neighborhood, which normally does not see much violent crime, according to police data. It is about a mile from President Obama’s home in Hyde Park.

Pendleton’s godfather, Chicago police officer Damon Stewart said that the teen was making big plans for her future at the time of her death. “She was working on some sort of exchange program, where she was going to go to school in Paris,” Stewart said. “She was a great student.”

The killing was shocking enough to warrant a mention at Wednesday’s Congressional hearings on gun violence. Illinois Sen. Dick Durbin brought Pendleton’s murder to the attention of a stunned audience during testimony. “Just a matter of days after the happiest day of her life, she’s gone,” Durbin said. “We have guns everywhere and some believe the solution to this is more guns. I disagree.”

So far in 2013, Chicago has seen 42 homicides. In 2012, 506 people were killed in the city. Only 25% of those murders were solved.

To think that just an afternoon in the park would lead to murder.

Whether this be about gun control or gang violence, it’s very frightening to know that we really are not safe anywhere…

Gang violence isn't something gun control is intended to affect, so this really doesn't apply to that issue. We have to crush the gangs, we have to eliminate drugs from the country.

The gun control mindset.... Maybe if they enacted even more laws criminals would obey them.

@orlando__

It isn't enough to enact laws. But if you enforce them too, you will have an impact. For example, if the part of the Constitution about "unreasonable search and seizure" were as much of a dead letter when it came to guns as it is for drugs, there might be fewer illegal guns floating around.

That cauldn't happen ! Chicago has the toughest gun laws in the country . aren't they being enforced ??????  the president came from there that's his model ?    WHY ISN'T IT WORKING ????????????????????????????????????????/

Once more the father of lies works his evil. One more child’s death in Obama’s home town is directly attributable to the satanic mantra that taking weapons from the non-violent in society will result in their safety from the violent. And once more the cheerleaders for the father of lies surround themselves with the memory and images of the victims of their malevolence as they piously campaign for more weapons to be taken from the non-violent.How long oh Lord?

OK, Krog, to put it in terms that you atheists understand:   The idiots on the left want to disarm law abiding Americans and are low enough to exploit children to do it.

Is this really about gun control or the inability to curb gang violence. This is a tragic loss of human life at the hands of gang members and those that are not cooperating are apart of the problem.

This is the problem with gun laws in this country and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to see the problems.  2 points I'm gonna make are this.  1. Law abiding citizens should be able to carry if they pass a background check.  2.  The people carrying illegal guns don't care about the laws!  Why does people carrying illegal guns in some places of our country get less jail time then someone who gets caught with an ounce or less of marijuana?  That is wrong!  How about we make stricter Federal Laws for carrying illegal guns!   If you get caught carrying an illegal gun you should get at least 10 years in prison.  If you get caught using an illegal gun you should get at least 25 years!  To make room in our prison system we could stop locking people up who use marijuana.

What the hell going in the US. It is time for all to work hard to get rid of tragedies. It is a shame this is happening in the civilized society.

My hearts goes out to the family of Hadiya Pendleton. I was raised in Chicago and graduated from the public school system. I became a Chicago Police Officer, so I know first hand the problems good honest citizens have to go through to live in the city. First, gangs run a big part Chicago with the tacit support of city government. If the city government wanted to put an end to these gang killings they could.

Second, gun laws in Chicago leave the majority of the 3 million residents completely vulnerable to the gangs. For many years, it was unlawful for any honest citizen to own ANY kind of firearm in the city. During this time the gangs took over the city. Gangs like the Blackstone Rangers, Disciples, Latin Kings, Vice Lords, totalling 100,000 members have taken over Chicago. While the mayor signs treaties with these murderers and gives them federal grants, the police continue the war against any citizen who sticks a 32 caliber handgun in their pocket for protection when they walk out of their house to try to go to work. Then there are the thousands of unarmed small business men and women who can't afford an armored truck to pick up their daily receipts, who are forced to walk out of their stores unarmed with a paper bag full of money. However, these business owners will be arrested for possesing ANY firearm.

So in Chicago the only people who get to be protected are elected officials, like the mayor and aldermen who have 24 hour protection from 100s of full time highly armed professional police officers. So after 40 years of disarming the population, the only people who can carry a gun are the police and criminals. The Second Amendment to the United States Constitution is dead in Chicago. This poor girl is as much a victim of the the policies of the City of Chicago as the "Dirty Bag" who killed her.

@BillMarcy I agree.  Why doesn't the city of Chicago create stricter gun laws for people who are getting caught carrying and using illegal guns?   It makes no sense to be strict on law abiding citizens yet there is not harsh gun laws for people who are carrying illegal guns.   When I mean strict I mean 10 years for your first offense.  Throwing years at these people might just make them think twice about carrying.

I guess the criminals didn't get the memo on the gun ban. Slaps King Obama right in the kisser. Miles from his home and Chicago has the highest homicide rate for 2012.  I want him to try to explain this one away! Sitting ducks just waiting to become the next victim. How's that gun ban working King Obama and you libs??

@releggneh This is just ONE MORE reason we have too many guns on the streets.  You're right though, King Obama does have a nice sound to it though.  However his only title is  Barack Obama (twice elected) President of the United States.

this sounds super fishy.  because people shoot people to get something.  Then if this "unIdentified Male " got into a waiting car this was planned.  So was she part of a gang or was she with someone who was?  I think us black people need to get independence from this U.S and form our own country because this isn't working for us.

bryanfred1

This almost sounds like some sort of initiation.  The shooter jumps a fence, shoots into a crowd, then jumps into a waiting car?  I frankly hope that's the case, otherwise the implication is honor students at Chicago's top magnet schools are hanging around (mid-day - why not in school at that time?) with gang members.

Really? This is the ad AGAINST gun control. She is in the city in the US with the most stringent gun control laws, and still she was shot. How's that working out for you? NO shooting in Chicago is an argument for gun control. Vermont has no restrictions of guns or carrying guns and the lowest murder/gun violence rate in the US. Also note that none of the witnesses would cooperate w/ the police: only 3 explainations for this. 1) they know the cops are dirty, 2) they are gang-affiliated, or 3) they fear retaliation from the gangs because the gangs have guns ( criminals ) and they don't ( law-abiding ). Last weekend in Chicago there were 19 shot, 2 dead and no one in custody when I read the article. Those gun laws are really effective

nice propaganda piece here!

Any informed and thoughtful person understands that Chicago has the strictest gun laws in the country. Criminals DO NOT CARE! I can't even believe the MSM would try to spin this towards more gun control. Are people really that stupid that they can't look at the statistical facts of places like Chicago and realize that gun control has the inverse effect of what is desired.

My beef with this whole anti gun propaganda machine is that this type of propaganda and ultimately diss arming the citizens historically ends up with hundreds of thousands and in many cases millions of people being exterminated. These are historical facts, do you really think it can't happen again. Wake up and look around the world.

Why doesn't Eric Holder round up these gang types and lock them up forever? Because it's easier to blame the gun than it is to blame the shooter I guess. Gangs murder more people in this country than any other identifiable group. They are our version of the Taliban.

Why don't these coward politicians do something about it?

I think this article was written too soon. Ask any Republican. These articles should be archive and release 1 years later.... *insert sarcasm here*
