Move America Forward is using President Obama’s nomination of former Republican senator Chuck Hagel to forge hate and, its real aim, to raise money. A conservative San Francisco radio talk-show host and a former California assemblyman created the outfit in 2004.

“There is already substantial opposition to his nomination and he can be stopped, but we have to act quickly if we are going to be successful,” the group told Battleland in an email that stunk up our inbox overnight. “We urgently need to raise $50,000 to produce and begin to air our first ad in opposition to President Obama’s insulting nomination of Sen. Hagel.”

It’s strange how rancid our politics have become. It’s shrill, vile and not befitting this country. Groups like Move America Backward accelerate the process.

When I read comments from rightists and leftists, I can't help but think of Mad Magazine's Spy Vs Spy cartoons.  Black and white thinking.  No shades of gray.  Absolutism at its worst.  This simple-minded "pick a side" mentality utterly fails to address complex issues where the more moderate voices of either side reside.  But when joining the rightists, one is dragged down by their unrelenting assault on gender and civil rights as well as overt (and pointless) corporate favoritism (be it public or defense).  Although much of the left has moved toward the center (far more than the right), they still tend to paint all rightists as war-mongering, angry white male woman-haters which isn't entirely true, either.  Plus, their economic policies are no better than the rightists because it takes a lot of the steam out of business which can detrimentally impact the economy.

Overall, I see the right as evil and the left as incompetent.  But still, the rhetoric is "pick a side".  The Devil on the right or the Deep, Blue Sea on the left.  I'd much rather not be siding with evil OR incompetence.

Whose country is it anyway?  It belongs to the people, but we let the two parties decide our fates.  We buy in to their two sided mentality because it's easier for THEM to incite our hatreds and fears than it is to engage our sense of union and cooperation - which is where the true strength of our country lies.  Granted, there is a large minority who can't think in terms of three (or more) sides, and there is a much smaller minority who can't think at all who prefer to let their leaders tell them what to think (political, religious or economic leaders).  For these people it's fairly simple, split them politically and draw the majority who CAN think to the middle where we actually have policies in COMMON rather than sit in a dogmatic leftist or rightist party staring belligerently at the other across a gulf of animosity, hate and complete political incompatibility doing nothing but obstructing the other side.

The only way to save America is to marginalize the extremists on the left and right (which the GOP is already doing - or at least the fracture lines are showing) and present the country with a third alternative which resides comfortably between the two encompassing a majority of policies that appeal to the non-extremists.  Single issue party members won't join because they're extremists who put up with any idiocy or evil as long as their issue is what they want it to be.   We don't need single-minded, one trick ponies.  But those who understand that the nature of politics IS compromise in order to properly run a country without troops in the streets will join because while they may not agree with everything this centrist party stands for, they can at least agree with most of it.

And the best part is that they don't have to join a party where candidates have to cater to a bunch of radical crazies in order to get elected.  They can actually speak their minds for a change.

PEOPLE HAVE THE GOVERNMENT THEY DESERVE = Thomas Jefferson, Alexis de Tocqueville, William Shakespere and Hunter. s. Thompson are said to have uttered this pearl of wisdom. -  Meanwhile........ FAMOUS LAST WORDS = "It’s strange how rancid our politics have become. It’s shrill, vile and not befitting this country. Groups like Move America Backward accelerate the process.",  which doesn't change the fact that people continue to have the government they deserve - STILL! The American people have to grow up and change for the better, too if it wants the government to change for the better.

What a load of hooey.  The NY Times finally had a letter today dealing with the equivalency issue.  It's about Time!

On a report on just how bad America's health is compared to other countries it was stated that it "is not the product of a particular administration or political party."  The response from a reader was "One of our parties has in fact long championed equal access to health care for all and one has fought that with reliable consistency.  Why pretend other wise?"

Shame on you, Mark Thompson.  Move America Forward, like Code Pink and a number of left organizations, HAVE NO IMPACT ON THIS DEMOCRATIC ADMINISTRATION or the Democratic party.   NONE.  One party fights the good fight and has moved center and we need the press to recognize that fact, not search for needles in a haystack to play the equivalency game.

>  we have to act quickly if we are going to be successful...

Successful at doing what? Generating a quick cash infusion before the Hagel nomination becomes a non-issue that can't be exploited further?

Suckers. Born. Every. Minute.

All I picture is some red faced moron screaming 'AAAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGHHHHH' when I read or hear righties now a days.

When did village idiotism become something celebrated?

The republican party has become the National Lampoon. They LOOK like real ads, but they need disclaimers that say "Not to be taken seriously".

I disagree. It's an accurate reflection of the voting public. The voters are the country. It is what it is.

It's been happening since the founding of Fox News as the spiral of misinformation in the media has blown out of control to epic proportions.  It's nothing new and it's only going to get worse until responsible journalists make a greater, wider effort to call them out on it.

@Lenina Did you not read the actual headline of the article?  Talk about propagandist drivel.  Helping the troops?  They want to kill the troops in efforts to secure American interests overseas.  Not security.  Interests.  As in financial interests.  Hate comes in many forms and propagandist tripe is one of them because people don't see what's wrong with it.

If you took the money out of these organizations, relied on nothing but unpaid volunteers and donated equipment, they'd be gone.  The financial interests backing them are gigantic.  And the hypocrisy of their very names (conservative interests are not progressive, which is to say they want to stay still or move BACKWARD) is a lie to deceive those too weak of mind to figure out that rightist interests are all about taking money from the poor and taking rights away from people while leftist interests are all about giving money to the poor and giving rights to people and BOTH skim off the top in doing it.

@jmac I don't get it.  What does Thompson's story about a fringe right group trying to torpedo an Obama nomination have to do with Code Pink?

sacredh

Well said jmac. The vast majority of the left is ashamed of Code Pink. We marginilize our crazies. The right votes for theirs.

I went in to work yesterday and told everybody "Obama gets sworn in on the 21st. Your world is over. Kiss your guns goodbye and stop having sex with your sisters". I kept a straight face.

No, it's been the National Lampoon from the beginning...a source of great amusement.

@DonQuixotic

You hit the nail right on the head. Since FOX began making right wing distortion fashionable and  giving voice to the stupid, the illiterate, god fearing retro white trash; the evolution of progressive thinking Americans have been held hostage, at gun point no less....I pray I live long enough to see this ugly virus of right wing ignorance slide into the dust bin of history. But we should never forget, least it raise its ugly head again.

@DonQuixotic 'It's been happening since the founding of Fox News...'

I think you can trace it back further -- at least to 1994 and Gingrich's list of  'contrasting words' (compiled with the help of Frank Luntz) that he recommended that republicans use against dems.  He encouraged them to use words like: “anti,” “betray,” “bizarre,” “corrupt,” “destructive,” “disgrace,” “shame,” “lie,” “pathetic,” “radical,” “self-serving,” “selfish,” “shallow,” “shame,” “sick,” “traitors”, etc.

Who (or what policy) they were using these words against didn't matter.  It was all about smearing opponents and manipulating a trusting public.

@bobcn @jmac Apologies to all, especially Thomas.  I read it wrong and thought it was a lefty organization.  There are some Left Groups and  Blogs out there fighting Hagel.  (We do have an accomplished woman as backup - and she's a Dem).

It's also the Right stealing yet again from the Left since "Forward" is MSNBC's code word.  They do that very effectively as George Bush jr stole 'No child Left Behind'.      So sorry for the misread.

jmac
jmac

@sacredh I read this article wrong and thought this group was a Left organization and apologized below.  But now that I think about it - The NY Times has a full page ad by an Israeli group against Hagel today, The Washington Post editorial came out against Hagel, and National Review has three articles up against Hagel. Because they are Mainstream does that make them any different from this conservative "Forward" group at the end of the day?  So your point is exactly correct, at the end of the day, Democrats don't join hands with Code Pink - Republicans have joined hands with "Forward".

sacredh

jmac, when I read your post I thought you were saying that fringe groups on the right OR the left don't warrant any reasonable consideration from their respective parties but that the democrats regognized their fringe for what it is...just a fringe element that we don't take seriously.

sacredh

Half of the guys I work with belong to the NRA. It should be interesting when I  start daylights tomorrow. I think there's only one other guy at work that doesn't own a gun besides me. As the resident left-winger, I often get treated as if I personally introduced every piece of legislation that they disagree with.
