Leon Panetta in the soon-to-be-released graphic novel, Killing Geronimo.

The heck with boring official oil-painting portraits of defense secretaries…Leon Panetta is blazing a new path by appearing in a graphic novel.

Killing Geronimo: The Hunt for Osama bin Laden is one of those grown-up comic books crammed with text, colorful graphics, and swear words.

Panetta, who was running the CIA at the time of the May 2011 SEAL raid that killed the 9/11 plotter, plays a major role in the novel’s closing pages, appearing in both green and blue tint washes.

Battleland thinks the artist’s dour Panetta doesn’t capture the SecDef’s joie de vivre, or however you say that in Italian. Which is strange, because the artist is Stephano Cardoselli, a Tuscan-born comic book artist who still lives and works in Italy. But perhaps that’s just how Panetta looks behind closed doors.
