Last week, Human Rights Watch was fretting over “killer robots” on the loose.

So, as is often the case, was the Pentagon. Two days after the HRW report, the Defense Department issued a directive designed to guide the development and use of what it prefers to call “autonomous weapons systems.”

Among other things, it stated the obvious:

Autonomous and semi-autonomous weapon systems shall be designed to allow commanders and operators to exercise appropriate levels of human judgment over the use of force.

There. Feel better now?
