To The Shores of Benghazi…

An Egyptian protester yells slogans in front of United States Embassy on Wednesday, the morning after it was vandalised by protesters.

The news of the killing of Chris Stevens, the U.S. ambassador to Libya, in an attack at the U.S. consulate in Benghazi is bitter. It was Benghazi, after all, that was the heart of the Libyan revolution last year. Libyan leader Muammar Ghadafi vowed to exterminate the rebels there like “rats.”

(PHOTOS: Protesters Scale U.S. Embassy Wall)

It was to protect the civilians of Benghazi that the U.S. went to war over Libya in 2011, along with its NATO, and some Arab, allies. Ghadafi was killed last October and now Stevens — who championed the rebels’ cause from his post in Benghazi — has sadly met the same fate.

The so-called “Arab spring” didn’t lance the anti-U.S. boil that has been oozing in the region for generations. The killings will require a major relook at how the U.S. plans to deal with its fledgling leaders.

The immediate political statements by both sides in the presidential race cheapens Stevens’ sacrifice. Romney said an early statement issued by the U.S. Embassy in Cairo that “condemns” – now there’s an interesting word choice – “the continuing efforts by misguided individuals to hurt the religious feelings of Muslims” was “disgraceful.” A White House spokesman denounced Romney’s comment as a “political attack.”

Sam Bacile is the 56-year old Israeli-American real-estate developer who who allegedly made the crude film mocking Islam’s founding prophet. It was a 13-minute trailer from that film that triggered the violence in Benghazi, as well as in Cairo.

Bacile is an idiot willing to toss fuel on smoldering embers – and then expresses surprise when it erupts into flames. The young men who stormed the consulate and embassy are idiots, too, zealots stoked by poor prospects for their own lives despite the overthrow of their longtime despots.

Here’s a news flash: American free speech doesn’t exist across much of the Arab world.

When crazed crowds mass – and local security is unable, or unwilling, to protect foreign diplomats – the guys stuck in the middle are people like Ambassador Stevens, State Department IT guru Sean Smith, and the two other U.S. personnel who perished alongside them. Their blood is on both idiots’ hands.

An update -- It has now been widely reported that "Sam Bacile" is not a real person.  Instead, the movie apparently was made by an Egyptian Coptic Christian named Nakoula Basseley Nakoula, who then told credulous reporters that he was an Israeli Jew named Sam Bacile (which should have aroused suspicion -- "Bacile" doesn't sound like a typical Jewish or Israeli name), and made up a story about the movie being funded by Jewish donors.  The false reports first appeared in AP stories and the Wall Street Journal, and now have spread through the internet around the world, where they will no doubt exist forever and will be believed  unquestioningly.

Mark Thompson is an experienced reporter, but in his justified anger at the makers of the movie he repeated the false story -- and the fact that he inserted the word "allegedly" in his description of Bacile doesn't help, because it is wrong to say that there is an Israeli named Bacile who "allegedly" made the movie when no such person exists.  He should post a correction on this blog.

You're a liar, Mark Thompson. That unwatchable film had nothing to do with these pre-planned attacks. Your mention of that is just a narrative  for you lefties to throw out and apologize for; what you're best at.

Why not push the notion that Islam be reformed? What other religion is so easily used to enrage then enslave the minds of the mindless?

This is not the first time these animals have killed for their religion. They have murdered thousands of innocent men, women, and children. It happens in every Muslim ruled country on this planet. There is no tolerance, no understanding, nothing, but submission and death.  These countries commit atrocities against their own people every day, most of the time it's not covered by Time or any other news outlet out of fear of pissing the animals off.  The smallest infraction can lead to brutal consequences; lashes, be-headings, the loping off of hands and feet, rapes, torture, the taking of land, so on and so on. People in this country complain/boycott Christian Leaders or business owners for speaking out about gay marriage. In those countries, people are rounded up and executed in the town square. Infidelity in our country means little to anyone anymore, but in Muslim countries, they are stoned to death. In America, an artist can wipe elephant dung on a portrait of Jesus, and it gets top billing at a museum, if you even draw a picture of Mohammed in Saudi Arabia, you're executed. In America, you can protest, burn our flag, spit on the pictures of our presidents, call them whatever you want, write pretty much whatever you want about them, and we all do that, but in those countries, you are put to sleep, usually against your will. So what's my point? We should never bow or care what these animals do or think, it's our right, not theirs to stop us. I hope this event only inspires more artists to speak out against all forms of religion, and unmask the the evil that it stands for..

No, Muslims are not idiots.  The people who stormed the consolate are murders.  You can't pin this down on a small group of people.

Sorry, but I don't agree with your claim about Muslims being violent or most violence in the world comes from Muslims.

As an African-American, I can truthfully claim that the vast majority of KKK members are White.  Should I hold that against all White people?

Heterotic
Heterotic

If you want to hold that against white people, go ahead. However, unlike muslims, most whites reject the KKK, and there are repercussions for racist violence, unlike the muslim violence around the world. Bad analogies such as yours are rather quite useless.

No what we agree on is that someone who would arbitrarily stereotype over a billion people is an idiot.

Muslims are idiots, most of the violence in the world today is by muslims, that is fact, that is not stereotyping. Too bad that you cannot see murderous tendencies of over a billion people you fool.

Here’s a news flash: American free speech doesn’t exist across much of the Arab world.

This is an almost impossible cultural divide to bridge. Not only does free speech not exist, but the concept of free speech does not exist for most people in most countries with autocratic governments, who literally cannot understand how we can "permit" such things to be published. The reaction is always, "Why don't you do something about this? People would not be allowed to say such things in my country."

Vincent Lovece
Vincent Lovece

Freedom of speech was unknown in Europe for a long time, and even the US had trouble with it at first, but you know something? We learned to tolerate freedom of speech. We learned to tolerate unpopular speech. We learned to allow people with opinions that differ from the majority, and while there are some things that may not be culturally acceptable to say in America, there is no legal prohibition on saying them. If we can learn how to live like that, so can everywhere else.

Terry Clifton

The blood is on the hands of these victims, belongs to Barack Obama and the sick animals who kill under the name of religion. He should have been well aware that the kind of response this type of film would do over there. To blame a filmmaker for the violence is not only weak, it goes against every tenet of free speech we enjoy in this country. I don't agree with anything Mr. Jones spews, or any other religious nut job, including the Pope, your (who's reading this post) preacher, pastor, minister, and priest. Religion is responsible for more mass killings, genocide, famine than every war fought in history. If Obama had attended any of the security meetings in the last couple of weeks, he could have gotten our personal out of Libya and Egypt until the violence and madness of these animals subsided, but no, he couldn't keep Jay-Z, David Letterman, and Beyonce' waiting..

There have been hundreds of movies, events, books, writings that has made us angry and mad enough to go to the streets, but luckily for us, we are not animals, we are civilized, even when we disagree for the most part.

fhmadvocat
fhmadvocat

Terry,

Why is there blood on the hands of Barack Obama?  He was not the one who make the movie.  I wouldn't even say there is blood on the hands of the idiot who made it.

If you blame Obama for this, do you blame Bush for 9/11?

Terry Clifton
Terry Clifton

So let me get this straight, it's wrong to make a movie that blasts Islam, but it's cool to blast any other religion? I say make one every day, someone should make one about all the murders committed under religion.

Who's more intolerant? Muslims or others?

I blame the Bush for Iraq, and many other things, but not 9/11/2001. That blame sets squarely on Islam, and those who kill for their religion.

You would think, well maybe not you, but anyone who followed the killings of the burning of the Koran, and the Dutch filmmaker who was killed in the Netherlands after making a film that spoke out against Islam, and any other reason those animals use to kill innocent people that our CIA and Obama would know that the blow back was coming.

When will we get the heck out of these countries, and let them kill each other over their pagan gods and rituals?

mantisdragon91
mantisdragon91

Yes because Obama should have know that a video with intent to stir violence in the Muslim world would be released by weak spirited bigots to coincide with 9/11.

Dan Brown wrote a book scandalizing Jesus, linking him to Mary Magdalene. Jesus was born in 1st century AD and he was a Palestinian. Leonardo da Vinci was born in the 15 th century and he was an Italian. How could da Vinci know the secret life of Jesus since he was not his contemporary? Jesus led a life of moral purity and he even said that if a man looks at a woman with sexual intent his eyes are to be extracted and thrown out. And yet, Dan Brown wrote the book out of his fancy and showing Jesus in a bad light. A movie based on Dan Brown’s book was screened worldwide. But there were no riots by Christians. Life of Mohammed the Prophet is known to all. Sam Bacile's movie is based on historical facts, unlike Dan Brown's imaginary version of Jesus.Students have studied about the Prophet in text books. Then why this violence and murders?

Vincent Lovece
Vincent Lovece

Bacile had every right to make that film. We cannot censor ourselves because a movie is unpopular with some people, or because it is politically incorrect or because someone's feelings might be hurt. We'd have to shut down every TV stations except for PBS if freedom of speech stopped at offending someone, somewhere.

Plus, the Muslims who did this clearly have issues a lot greater to worry about than a silly little movie. I'm just happy the violence was a lot less severe than the Danish cartoon riots. Seriously, what sort of people riot in dozens of cities over cartoons?

There are hundreds of thousands of Khaddafy's militarized ex-supporters in Libya.  They benefited from Cheney/Bush improvements in relations between our two countries.

The US ambassador appears to have been assassinated by RPG armed military group in Benghazi.  Khaddafy has been avenged against Obama by his people, and their US friends are satisfied.

Why is Sam Bacile an idiot; should free speech be suspended because radical bloodthirsty Islamist's are going to riot? Why can't someone mock Mohammed?  Muslim's mock Christians and Jews all the time. We're all infidels remember? Do radical foreign Muslim's get to dictate what sort of messages western civilization can put out? It's disgusting and duplicitous that a "journalist" who depends on the rights of free speech is calling someone that exercized that right an idiot. Sam Bacile isn't an idiot, he's a hero.  Mark Thompson is an idiot.

Sam Bacile isn't an idiot, he's a hero.

Muslim bashing makes a person a hero? I guess that the hate-filled, extremist American right wing is just chock full of these self-identified 'heroes', then.

Glorifying this Bacile character demeans what it is to be a hero.

You had a decent point - even idiots like Bacile have a right to spew whatever bile they want to in the grand ol' US of A - but to equate what Bacile did to someone committing a selfless act of bravery is ludicrous.

Terry Clifton
Terry Clifton

Muslim bashing? Really? What do you call yourself, when you along with your pack bashes Christianity/Mormonism as if you're discussing sports scores?

Bacile made a movie, ok, so does a lot of people, his just happens to be about a wacked out religion and its' blood thirst for world domination. At least he has the guts to do it, unlike those like you who kick Christianity around without the fear of being hunted down, and murdered.  Gays and lesbians are crucified, stoned,  hanged, and finally decapitated for no other reason than being different than the Koran forbids it. Where's the rage?

This thing called religion makes monsters out of  certain people, and hypocrites out of others, but I'm glad you fall into the latter..

islam aint a "wacked" religion. its a different religion.

as an agnostic i prefer to diversify myself in regards to religion, and while i dont know much ive read; the king james bible, the book of mormon, the kuran, several jewish texts, several Buddhist texts. i can tell you right now that all of them preach love and peace.

you know which religion preaches hatred and greed? the christian faith. never, in any other religion, have so many people died for no reason other then opinions. those who practice christian faiths are often charlatans, hypocrites, greedy, hate filled individuals who are deluded and suffer from grandeur.

it takes a strong man or woman to live the principles of their faiths texts, it takes a weak creature to live "by the book" as their faith dictates.

creatures like you? go back to eden. lillith wants your soul.

Why are Muslims / Mohammed protected from criticism

They aren't. You're doing it here, now.

Bacile IS a hero for having the guts...

No, he isn't. Takes more to be a hero than simply speaking up about how much he thinks we should fear a religion and ridicule its prophets.

anon76returns

Yeah, as I said earlier, putting someone else's a** on the line for what you said is pretty far from hero material.

Obamarrhoids
Obamarrhoids

Why are Muslims / Mohammed protected from criticism?  There would be daily murderous rampages if  Christians  and Jews reacted this way every time a Muslim/s vilified them and their faith's.  And no one would be blaming Muslims for instigating it.  Actually the exact opposite is true.  For instance, when Israel is shelled for weeks from Gaza and they finally retaliate, Israel gets blamed for instigating violence. Arabs name streets after mass murderers who have killed numerous Israeli citizens and they're not criticized for it by the American media or political establishment. The double standard is preposterous. BTW, Bacile IS a hero for having the guts to actually say what so many think about Mohammed and the origins of Islam.

Obama appeasement is to blame for the deaths of Stevens and others.  You will never be able to negotiate with murderers, thieves and imbeciles.

Mark,

What is with this "false equivalancy" statements?  How has anything the Obama administration said that "cheapens Stevens' sacrifice"?

The Romney campaign took a tragedy, without knowing all the facts and tried to score some cheap political points.  The Obama administration correctly called this a "political attack".

The more I look at Romney's behavior in foreign policy, the more I wonder if this guy is ready to be president.

Romney looked presidential by politicizing a tragedy?  He looked presidential by failing to admit he spoke to soon and should have waited until he had the facts before he spoke?

Romney talks tough, but the world of international affairs is much more complicated than the world of business and Romney can't bully the likes of Putin like he could when Bain made leveraged buyouts of failing businesses.

Kevin, you have swallowed so much of the anti-Obama kool-aid, you have completely missed the number of REPUBLICANS who stated that what Romney did was a mistake.
