Navy SEAL Reportedly Set To Tell All About bin Laden Raid In New Book

We’ve been hearing rumbles for months that a SEAL involved in the raid that killed Osama bin Laden was working on a book. The New York Times is now reporting it’s coming out September 11 and will be called No Easy Day: The Firsthand Account of the Mission That Killed Osama bin Laden.

The Navy SEAL allegedly involved will write under the pseudonym “Mark Owen,” with help from Kevin Maurer, an author who has been embedded with Special Forces in Afghanistan.

Kind of ironic, if true, given this group of former SEALs’ concerns about operational security. It’s also going to raise questions about the degree to which the Obama Administration enabled this book to be published two months before the President is up for re-election.

Critics have already faulted his Administration for cooperating with a movie about the daring night-time raid into bin Laden’s compound in Abbottabad, Pakistan, that killed the al Qaeda leader, the sponsor of the 9/11 attacks.

It’s tough to figure how the author, assuming he is legitimate, could get government approval for such a tale. Anthony Shaffer ran into a lot of problems when Pentagon intelligence officials objected to passages in his 2010 book, Operation Dark Heart. Ultimately, the book was published with many sentences blacked out.

The Times suggests this is going to turn into a carnival:

Because the book is written under a pseudonym, the author will appear in disguise during television interviews to promote the book. At least one major network prime-time appearance has been planned, a person familiar with the plans said, and during interviews on television and radio, the author’s voice would be altered.

It’s profoundly disturbing that the author is trading in on his inside knowledge in such a brazen way. Assuming it’s true, some of his fellow SEALs will not be pleased. Those aren’t guys you want to tick off. It will further shine a light on secrets that should be kept. But you can bet some of the profits from the volume, to be published by Penguin, will be earmarked for charities that help veterans or their families.

They don't talk. They don't talk to anyone except each other; and they certainly don't write books.

SEALs are mercenaries just like the rest of the military.  Will kill for food.  Apparently one was literate enough to write for money too.

Well "CLASSIFIED" information is never published.  In general i think having a lot of classified information in a open democratic system is not a good thing.  The Russians and many other countries already know how our special forces work.  In fact if you want to read a detailed account of how the mission was pulled off many Russian Intelligence sites already pointed it out.

The stealth helicopter that was used in the mission had already been reported by the EU,china and russian Intelligence sites.

In fact right now the united states has another stealth helicopter. A new plane and mini sub all have been reported by overseas sites.

Just like the russian's had a new nuclear powered sub in the gulf of Mexico. None of our major news sites reported on that.

When I was in the Navy (way too many years ago), classified material was a bit of a joke that went "It's only classified for the American public and most of our own military, the Soviets already know more than we do."

Yeah when i worked for a DOD contractor. We had "CLASSIFIED" electronic parts that we got from china. Since it was cheaper to get them from china and china was the only place that made them. lol

The other funny thing that happen i live by a army base. And the military "under the cover of night" tried to move a new drone stealth plane on a few trucks.  But the plane was so big they could not cover it up. And they had like 10 other army trucks with it.  They had so many people upload photos of that thing to the net around here it was funny. Everyone firgured the military was moving a big UFO.  In fact it made the news and they had to say well it is a "new" plane we have.

So yeah like you the DOD CLASSIFIED deal is kind of a joke. Half of the time if you good at using google you can find Russian and other sites overseas that tells everything the united states is doing.

My wife's brother died as part of the Army Special Operations Task Force in Bush War I. You can find his name on the memorial inside the compound at Fort Bragg; you just cannot get inside the compound! It would disgrace his memory to exploit the Seal's bin Laden operation.

I do not want to know what the SEALS did or how -- if you and me were trained as the SEALS, we would  have achieved much  the same;   just that mission per se is nothing to boast about, when Osama was finished -- years,  years after 9/11 -- why did it take so many years for the intelligence to get this basic information.  It is all a hype.   I would rather remember the spirited Israeli action at Entebbe or the attack on the Iraqi nuclear reactor.  Silence speaks.

I served with the Marines during Vietnam and we generally didn't like anyone talking to the media because shit happens that can be embarrassing to individuals during any mission.  I don't know any unit that would be ok with one guy getting rich for a mission a lot of guys took part in.

If he has the blessing of his fellow SEALs who were with him on that mission, more power to him. If not, he should probably leave the Navy if he hasn't done so already, as this would go against the code of brotherhood that exists among soldiers and ensures cohesion when in harm's way.

Perhaps MO is merely confirming the script the Hollywood producers obtained from the administration for their movie.

I will not see the movie, however, I will buy the book and watch / listen to every interview

of MO available.

I predict, unfortunately,  Obama will be re-elected  'cause of the media pushing the

scale .  If so,  I suppose it is best for the west to return to the old Californio, letting Mexico have it long enough to ruin it like the remainder of Mexico. Then the guys with white hats will  again ride as they did in the Battle of San Jacinto, 4-21-1836.

Why is the Obama administration so intent on bringing Assange back to the U.S. for interrogation when it is leaking a top secret mission in a book, and other secret missions during the Obama term?.......perhaps a ghost writer in the Obama administration is writing it, I cannot see this seals superiors giving any type of approval for this, you are sworn to secrecy in the military on classified operations. Why are they holding Bradley if they allow others to disclose military secrets?....

You people are impossible.  When Bush kept everything tight secret and conducted missions behind everyone's back, you ask for transparency.  When there is transparency, you ask for secrecy.

Obama has proven him self from time to time a much capable Commander in Chief.  From the Somali hostage, to Libya, to killing Bin Laden, he was decisive and he was right.  He knows what he is doing.

Even tho I dislike your analogy because you give Obama so much credit and I really hate the man, I would have to agree with you because JFK did the same thing during the CUBAN MISSILE CRISES.

Ultimately, The President decisions are final and are put to the test for everyone, directly and in-directly !

Different targets for the outrage, of course. One was "their" guy and the other is "our guy."  It's been an interesting dance Obama has engaged in: twirling his anti-war base while eyeing the hawks waiting to be asked to dance.

There is a difference between transparency and divulging information vital to national security.  Obama and his administartion hasn't seemed to grasp that seperation yet.

I'm sure the declarations that are CLASSIFIED, will remain so.  Secret, is a limp word.  A handshake can be secret.  Tactics will not be exposed I presume.

Bradley Manning gave Assange the classified cables for free... how unamerican can you get... exposing diplomatic/political lies and hypocrisy for no remuneration?
