This Isn’t Funny…

The Army’s failure to cut down on its suicide rate makes it a target for people without taste. Alas, the July figures due out shortly are unlikely to help.

As someone who has covered military suicides, and the folks waging the battle against it, for years, it hurts when your best efforts aren’t turning the tide. But they will, eventually. That should be enough to keep the Army’s suicide-fighters fighting the good fight. h/t Mike Crowley

Let's see now why  in the world would people; being asked to kill innocent people on the basis that we know of some cases of injustice (something that is common occurance in America) , ever want to kill themselves?   Duh .  Could it be they are trying to dismantle the greater evil of the two enemies?

Yeah, this isn't really grabbing me as funny haha.  More like, wry, dark, social commentary calling attention to where it is obviously needed.

as long as depression counseling is required to be reported on the security clearance questionnaire, people will either avoid or have ambivalent feelings about counseling. No one can get help if they don't feel safe and comfortable talking to their counselors. And day after day people will continue to kill themselves.

just want to second this. i am an intel guy with depression, but i refuse to get help b/c i don't want have to put it on my clearance. like usafjag i did the research. Bill, you really should make sure you know what you are talking about before you answer things like this. Combat PTSD counseling is exempt. that is all

It's not required any longer and hasn't been for some time.

Bill-Funny, I was required to disclose my depression counseling for after being raped in order to get my clearance, and then talk about it to an OPM investigator last year. Combat related PTSD , family, and grief counseling are exempt, but all other counseling must be disclosed. And guess, what: as an attorney, you can bet your a--I went and did the research before I completed question 21. if you go to the site clearancejobs dot com and search question 21 you can see what is required.

You might contemplate that the Onion story is not actually supposed to be all that funny.

I got the same impression. I was not meant to be funny. Over the top yet inversely compassionate.

It seems to me to be a powerful statement for doing something. The Onion isn't all about frivolity, it more often is tongue in cheek, which requires a more sophisticated reader to appreciate.  Very good point you make.
