President Obama Wednesday signed off on new sanctions against Syrian leaders including Syrian President Bashar al-Assad. This is the first time the White House has taken any substantive action against Assad himself, though his forces have likely killed at least 1,000 pro-democracy demonstrators. The new sanction come two days after the discovery of an apparent mass grave near Deraa that reportedly contained the remains of at least 13 civilians.
