Former Nebraska Democrat Sen. Bob Kerrey told Battleland Tuesday that eliminating Osama bin Laden represents a significant national security achievement for President Obama. “On a national security basis, it is an accomplishment that helps him a great deal,” Kerrey said in an interview.

But given the stratified electorate, the benefits for Obama politically remain murky.

I don’t know. That remains to be seen. One of the problems today is that the country is so polarized there is 35 percent of the voters out there that I don’t know what the president could do to convince them that he was born in the United States and they ought to trust him. It’s a pretty polarized country right now. It is different, I would say, from other situations where a president achieves a substantial success, like first President Bush when his numbers went close to 90 percent approval rating after Desert Storm.
